Lions roaring as road favorite (AP)

Now that's more like it.

Pro Picks rallied as if Josh Freeman was leading the charge, going 11-4-1 against the spread and 13-3 straight up. That was as impressive a turnaround as what the Steelers and Titans displayed in Week 2 after ugly openers.

Or as noteworthy as what is going on for Detroit. The Lions not only are 2-0, but this week are road favorites. In a division game, no less.

The Lions' roar has been heard in Tampa and at Ford Field, with Detroit outscoring the Bucs and then the Chiefs by a combined 75-23. This isn't the team we've grown to ignore except when they host the early Thanksgiving Day game ? or when they are going 0-16.

Nope, these Lions are a 3 1/2-point choice at Minnesota, and rightfully so after the power they have shown. The Vikings are 0-2 and, while they haven't been nearly as hapless as some of the other winless squads, they twice have blown late leads.

In this game, they won't likely have a late lead. Or any sort of lead, unless the Lions get cocky.

"We have some experienced players and they know that two games don't make a season," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. "We have a hard-working group of players that understand that it's not about what you've done in the past, it's what you do in the future ... nobody's trying to rain on any parades or anything else, but it's two games."

Soon to be three games won.

LIONS, 24-16

New England (minus 9) at Buffalo

We usually like home underdogs. In this case, though, see last week: "Until otherwise notified, the Patriots will be the choice to cover, whatever the spread."

BEST BET: PATRIOTS, 41-28

Miami (plus 2 1/2) at Cleveland

Let the weirdness continue for Dolphins: lose at home, win on the road.

UPSET SPECIAL: DOLPHINS, 16-13

N.Y. Jets (minus 3 1/2) at Oakland

This would be the upset special if the Raiders were healthier. They should at least cover.

JETS, 20-19

Green Bay (minus 3 1/2) at Chicago

Pack is in Super Bowl form, losing players (Nick Collins) and winning games.

PACKERS, 28-16

Houston (plus 4) at New Orleans

Inside the Superdome could be a true proving ground for the Texans. Or not.

SAINTS, 34-27

Atlanta (plus 1 1/2) at Tampa Bay

If this game is close in final period, count on Freeman and the Bucs.

BUCCANEERS, 24-23

Denver (plus 7) at Tennessee

Titans come off big win without getting much from Chris Johnson. They'll get plenty this week.

TITANS, 24-20

San Francisco (plus 2 1/2) at Cincinnati

Niners' first road game ? and they will remain in the East before their second next week at Philadelphia.

49ERS, 16-13

Jacksonville (plus 3 1/2) at Carolina

Time for Cam Newton to either come down to Earth, or get his first pro win.

PANTHERS, 27-16

Kansas City (plus 14 1/2) at San Diego

Chiefs have been league's worst team by far. Can't believe they are really that bad.

CHARGERS, 30-20

Baltimore (minus 3 1/2) at St. Louis

Winless and battered is no way to face the angry (at themselves) Ravens.

RAVENS, 17-10

Pittsburgh (minus 10 1/2) at Indianapolis

How juicy: Big Ben vs. four-time MVP Peyton ... oh, wait. Wrong year.

STEELERS, 22-7

Arizona (minus 3) at Seattle

OK, forget about that attraction to home underdogs, considering these last three picks.

CARDINALS, 23-10

Washington (OFF) at Dallas, Monday night

Redskins can stamp themselves as a real contender in NFC East with a win. Tony Romo's injured ribs force this one off the board.

COWBOYS, 26-21

N.Y. Giants (OFF) at Philadelphia

Michael Vick's status clouds this game and eliminates any betting line. But Eagles still are the healthier (and superior) team.

EAGLES, 24-17

___

RECORD:

Against spread: 11-4-1 (overall 17-13-2); straight up 13-3 (overall 19-13).

Best Bet: 1-1 against spread, 1-1 straight up.

Upset Special: 1-1 against spread, 1-1 straight up.

First celeb bounced from 'Dancing with the Stars' (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? "Dancing with the Stars" viewers didn't give Metta World Peace a chance.

The basketball star formerly known as Ron Artest was the first celebrity ejected Tuesday from the 13th edition of the ABC dancing competition. The show's judges gave World Peace the lowest score on Monday's premiere: 14 out of a possible 30.

The outgoing Los Angeles Lakers forward was locked out after viewer votes were combined with the judges' scores.

"All I want to know is who's coming with me?" he joyfully shouted after his dismissal.

Len Goodman, the show's head judge, said World Peace's cha-cha with professional partner Peta Murgatroyd was "all sizzle and no sausage" and his footwork in the ballroom was "atrocious."

For his debut performance, the over-the-top athlete bared his chest in a shimmering gold vest and shaved the Hebrew words for "world peace" into the side of his head.

The 11 celebrities remaining in the competition are World Cup soccer player Hope Solo; reality stars Robert Kardashian and Kristin Cavallari; TV personalities Nancy Grace, Carson Kressley and Ricki Lake; actors David Arquette and J.R. Martinez; Italian actress Elisabetta Canalis; singer Chynna Phillips; and author and activist Chaz Bono.

Southsea Fest 2011 | Arts and Entertainment | Pugwash News

Every once in a while, something randomly brilliant happens. Five years ago, you would have never guessed that one venue that housed 200 people could have evolved into something so enticing and expansive. Now a fully-fledged festival which this year celebrates its 5th anniversary, punters had the choice of 16 venues to attend, covering genres far and wide, in addition to poetry, comedy, and the occasional spoken word session. From the pubs and clubs to the music venues to King?s Theatre, Southsea Fest is nothing but an experience.

Caves at One Eyed Dog. Photo by Jack Foster

?One day, one city, one street? is the motto of Southsea Festival, and following the snake-like trail?of Albert Road, you certainly get the feeling of opportunity, seeing some of the best upcoming and unsigned acts going in Portsmouth.

Starting the day off with Brake Start Brake in The Globe Inn, I was intrigued as to what lied in store for me, as a single artist made his way onto stage, expecting acoustic melodies, I was greeted with a bombardment of noise and violent chords. Although a brave and experimental attempt, it felt as if I was in the midst of an awkward marriage of acoustic with electro beats.

Next up, drifting into Little Johnny Russells, Gloryhole happened to be on the cards, and albeit having a racy name, unfortunately happened to be one of the most straightforward and banal rock bands I?ve ever seen. Imagine seeing a bunch of middle aged men, who happen to look like science teachers and sound like Suede, then throw in some unimpressed punters and there you have it.

Leaving LJRs to visit Rockfeedback @ the Loft and seeing Watashi Calcutechs, I was hilariously greeted instead by an empty room, no band, and boxes full of last month?s flyers. For a venue that was supposed to have started near an hour and a half ago, it sort of soured the experience.

Even though they started twenty minutes late, Curxes at LJRs happened to be a fresh face to see, playing Hurts-like songs to a crowd of indie punters, and once again happened to keep a smile on faces. Moving onwards towards the King?s Theatre, it felt strange to go from standing in the middle of a crowd to sitting down on plush velvet seats at the front row of a playhouse. Enter Portsmouth local folk band Matthew and the Atlas, and the befitting banjo music that plays for half an hour smoothens the harsh electro I?ve witnessed most of the day.

After finishing on a foot stomping song, we witness Fionn Regan grace the stage with as little as a whimper. Expecting something a little lively, and as he puts it a record that stands the test of time, all I hear are lines of nonsensical, yet soothing lyrics towards the crowd about overhead projectors showing slides of North Korea. Trying hard not to fall asleep to the sounds of this Irish singer-songwriter, I decide to move on midway through the set towards Club NME.

Catching the tail end of Talons at The Edge of The Wedge, their noise rock/ electronica instrumental fusion worked wonders for the lullabied mind I had adopted at King?s Theatre. Leaving through the side door into the Wedgewood Rooms, even more experimental rock managed to sober the folk I was subjected to, courtesy of Bleeding Heart Narrative and Clock Opera, the Wedge once again proved why it is one of the most favoured venues of the South. Definitely two bands to keep an eye out for in the near future.

Wondering back towards the Globe Inn to catch folk rockers Dry The River, Albert Road was ablaze with motion, banter and drunken hordes of indie lads, all in search for the next big thing or something close to it.

However, a constant underlining issue that ran throughout the whole day, evening and night, was scheduled timing. Bands that were scheduled at 6 played nearer to 7, which for me sort of ruined the whole feeling of the Festival. It caused someone from the crowd in The Globe Inn before Dry The River played to jump on stage, hurl a torrent of abuse at the band to hurry things up before being gracefully booted out to a ton of applause. Although it remained an absolutely great gig, eschewing sounds of Dexy?s Midnight Runners with Joe Cockeresque howls, it did raise a point.

Club NME concluded with the Reading based indie greats Pete and the Pirates, fresh from creating new LP ?One Thousand Pictures?. Front man Tom Saunders highly rewarded those who have made it this far with a stunning performance to a jam packed Wedgewood Rooms. Songs stick out like sore thumbs, amidst crowd favourites ?Mr. Understanding?, ?Knots?, ?Jennifer? and many more.

Irregardless of timing issues throughout the day for most venues, Southsea Festival 2011 still remained a fresh experience wherever you went to. Giving something to everyone, no matter what the genre, no matter what the venue, it still managed to showcase what Portsmouth really has to offer both in terms of new and established talent.

Official says 35 bodies found in Mexican city

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The bodies of 35 people with suspected links to organized crime were found in two abandoned trucks on a highway underpass in the eastern Mexican city of Veracruz on Tuesday, the local prosecutor said.

The bodies were discovered near a shopping center in Boca del Rio, adjacent to the Gulf port city of Veracruz, state prosecutor Reynaldo Escobar told television station Milenio.

"These were people involved in organized crime," Escobar said of the victims. Seven had been identified.

Newspapers Milenio and La Jornada said some of the bodies had their hands tied and showed signs of torture. A number had been pulled from the trucks and put on the pavement before the drivers fled.

About 42,000 people have been killed since President Felipe Calderon launched a campaign against drug cartels at the beginning of his term in late 2006. Most of that violence has been focused on the northern border with the United States.

Veracruz has been little affected so far, although a group of armed men hurled a grenade in August into a popular area of Veracruz city, killing one person.

Rental Profits Investment Home You Never Heard Of

???

By : Norris Hart ?? zero times read
Submitted 2011-09-21 11:36:03 Many people desire buying a vacation house. Yet frequently worries concerning maintaining it, leasing it out in the off-season, as well as justifying the cost when it???s only to be used for a couple weeks of the year keep them from making the desire a reality. Now condominium places to stay, a modern sort of holiday getaway home possession, offer a welcome solution to most of these difficulties.Often called condotels or aparthotels, condo hotels have been rising in reputation as an approach to having a superb second home.Condo hotel buyers purchase an actual condominium unit in a trendy hotel or vacation resort. The property operates as a full-service hotel, and owners get access to just about all facilities, amenities along with services just like hotel guests. They will get a deed to their unit and may use their vacation property when they want. When not in residence, they can place their unit into the hotel???s rentals program and share in the revenue it produces. Like most real estate investments, the owner also can sell his condominium hotel unit at any time and can earn profits on its appreciated value.Youthful professionals, seniors and also senior citizens likewise are only beginning to discover the advantages of buying a condo hotel unit. They will take pleasure in the hassle-free nature of condo hotels as a second property in which a specialized management company deals with everything from property maintenance to finding hotel guests to rent the units. Additionally they consider condo hotels a way to diversify their assets.Condo Hotels Are Not TimesharesAs hybrid properties, condo hotels differ from timeshares in numerous ways. With timeshares, purchasers only pay for the right to operate the house for a set length of time each year, typically just one week. They don???t own the title to the property, and they don't get virtually any rent revenue for the weeks they???re not in residence.Condo hotel owners are able to use their own condo rentals when they want all year round, within the regulations of the specific development. They get a percentage of any revenue their unit generates whenever they???re not there and the unit is rented out to hotel visitors.Timeshares typically decline in worth with time, instead of appreciate. Even though the history of condo hotel resales is pretty limited, they're seen as an appreciating asset.Condo Hotels Provide FacilitiesHow can condo hotels differ from owning a standard single family home or condo? Buyers who buy a conventional condominium pay property taxes, insurance and maintenance fees, however typically don???t have access to hotel-type creature comforts.Condo hotels, in contrast, aren't your normal second home. They are suites inside a hotel designed condominium. The properties normally feature four- or five-star services, ranging from full-service spas and also fitness centers to fully-equipped business facilities as well as fine-dining restaurants. Additionally they include outstanding hotel services such as concierge, valet and also room service. With condo hotels, owners enjoy the rewards of condominium ownership while making the most of the liberties of a full-service hotel.Condo hotel units vary from studios and full-size condominiums to lavish penthouses and villas. Rates pertaining to these homes vary from $250,000 to over one million for top properties.Condo Hotels Create Revenue To Cover Their ExpensesWhy is the condominium hotel strategy so attractive? When owners usually are not utilizing their condo hotel unit, they have the choice regarding putting it into the hotel's leasing system. They get 60% of the income their unit creates with the balance going to the hotel operator. The revenue generated helps balance out the expenses connected with buying a holiday property.Even though many hotel operators don???t promise the rental of the condo, by capitalizing on the hotel's brand, strong sales and advertising capabilities, centralized booking system and management experience, owners usually receive a higher level of rental earnings as compared to a standard holiday getaway home.More importantly, ownership is 100 percent hassle-free, as the hotel operator takes care of finding hotel guests and maintaining the unit in addition to managing the property???s numerous amenities.Condominium Hotel Costs Are Usually SharedHow are the ownership expenses split? Contained in the rental contract, the hotel covers almost all operating expenses such as housekeeping, administration, sales and advertising. The condo hotel owner typically pays for real estate property taxes, insurance policies and capital improvements. The rental income that owners get helps defray these costs and, in some instances, provides extra income.Condo Hotels As Investment ToolsThough developers primarily sell their condo hotel units as a way of life and holiday vacation house alternative, a lot of buyers see value in the condo hotel strategy as an investment tool. Many say it offers them the very best of both realms. They are able to enjoy all of the great things about vacationing in a first-class hotel whilst they own real estate which has opportunity

NASA's WISE mission captures black hole's wildly flaring jet

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2011) ? Astronomers using NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) have captured rare data of a flaring black hole, revealing new details about these powerful objects and their blazing jets.

Scientists study jets to learn more about the extreme environments around black holes. Much has been learned about the material feeding black holes, called accretion disks, and the jets themselves, through studies using X-rays, gamma rays and radio waves. But key measurements of the brightest part of the jets, located at their bases, have been difficult despite decades of work. WISE is offering a new window into this missing link through its infrared observations.

"Imagine what it would be like if our sun were to undergo sudden, random bursts, becoming three times brighter in a matter of hours and then fading back again. That's the kind of fury we observed in this jet," said Poshak Gandhi, a scientist with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). He is the lead author of a new study on the results appearing in the Astrophysical Journal Letters. "With WISE's infrared vision, we were able to zoom in on the inner regions near the base of the stellar-mass black hole's jet for the first time and the physics of jets in action."

The black hole, called GX 339-4, had been observed previously. It lies more than 20,000 light-years away from Earth near the center of our galaxy. It has a mass at least six times greater than the sun. Like other black holes, it is an ultra-dense collection of matter, with gravity that is so great even light cannot escape. In this case, the black hole is orbited by a companion star that feeds it. Most of the material from the companion star is pulled into the black hole, but some of it is blasted away as a jet flowing at nearly the speed of light.

"To see bright flaring activity from a black hole, you need to be looking at the right place at the right time," said Peter Eisenhardt, the project scientist for WISE at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "WISE snapped sensitive infrared pictures every 11 seconds for a year, covering the whole sky, allowing it to catch this rare event."

Observing the jet's variability was possible because of images taken of the same patch of sky over time, a feature of NEOWISE, the asteroid-hunting portion of the WISE mission. WISE data enabled the team to zoom in on the very compact region around the base of the jet streaming from the black hole. The size of the region is equivalent to the width of a dime seen at the distance of our sun.

The results surprised the team, showing huge and erratic fluctuations in the jet activity on timescales ranging from 11 seconds to a few hours. The observations are like a dance of infrared colors and show that the size of the jet's base varies. Its radius is approximately 15,000 miles (24,140 kilometers), with dramatic changes by as large as a factor of 10 or more.

"If you think of the black hole's jet as a firehose, then it's as if we've discovered the flow is intermittent and the hose itself is varying wildly in size," Poshak said.

The new data also allowed astronomers to make the best measurements yet of the black hole's magnetic field, which is 30,000 times more powerful than the one generated by Earth at its surface. Such a strong field is required for accelerating and channeling the flow of matter into a narrow jet. The WISE data are bringing astronomers closer than ever to understanding how this exotic phenomenon works.

A video showing variations of the black hole jet, as seen via WISE observations, is online at http://www.astro.isas.jaxa.jp/~pgandhi/wise_gx339/wise_blackhole_anim.html .

Early on, Sweden was a country where poor children had a good chance of ending up financially stronger than their parents. This is one conclusion reached in a doctoral thesis in Economic History from the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg. Researcher Birgitta Jansson shows that the relative poverty in Sweden decreased from 1925 to 1983, with 1983 being the year with the lowest level of income inequality. However, then the pendulum started to swing back towards growing income differences.

Using data from Gothenburg, Jansson studied Swedish household incomes from 1925 to 2003. She looked at income mobility, poverty and income distribution in society, and found that Sweden had a high level of income mobility already before the rise of the welfare state, meaning prior to 1958. Children with poor parents had a good chance of ending up financially stronger than their parents.

'The fact that Sweden had a high level of income mobility was probably mainly a result of the transition from farming to industry and that we have been a rather homogenous country for a long time,' says Jansson.

Her research shows that the country's income differences decreased from 1925 to 1983. Poverty decreased from 1925 to 1947 and then again from 1958 to 1983. During these two periods, the country's economic growth benefitted the poor through reduced unemployment and decreasing income differences. Yet then the tide turned.

'After 1983 the trend turned towards growing income differences and increasing relative poverty. This was due to major labour market and tax reforms and that the stock market really started to take off. These changes benefitted the already wealthy more than any other group. Add to this that the general attitude towards very high incomes changed around this time. It became acceptable to make a lot of money,' says Jansson.

Ahmadinejad heads to U.N. assembly weakened by rivals

By Parisa Hafezi

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad headed for the annual U.N. General Assembly on Monday with little scope for effective diplomacy, weakened by rivals at home maneuvering to prevent his words to the world being taken as Tehran's official stance.

Trying to divert attention from his fading standing in the Islamic Republic, Ahmadinejad told U.S. media on Tuesday the two U.S. citizens recently sentenced to eight years in prison for alleged espionage would be freed "in a couple of days."

But Iran's judiciary, controlled by rival conservative hardliners, immediately and publicly humiliated Ahmadinejad by ruling out any imminent release of Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, highlighting the president's deepening credibility deficit.

"Hardline rulers have taken the gloves off against Ahmadinejad ... by delaying the release of the Americans ... The establishment showed that Ahmadinejad is a lame-duck president," said political analyst Hasan Farzi. "Such a weak president is unlikely to be able to achieve any diplomatic breakthrough while meeting world leaders in New York."

Contradictory announcements by Iranian leaders renders comprehension of Iran's complex clerical-led hierarchy even more difficult for the West in such sensitive areas as diplomacy on Iran's contested nuclear program and the popular upheaval in Syria, Iran's key ally in the Middle East.

Iranian politicians, influential clerics and the elite Revolutionary Guards, who quelled anti-government outpourings in the streets after Ahmadinejad's disputed 2009 re-election, have distanced themselves from the president over his challenging of the authority of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Ahmadinejad has suffered a series of dramatic setbacks in his power struggle with Khamenei. In the past months at least 25 allies of Ahmadinejad have been arrested and several websites affiliated with them have been blocked.

His closest ally, Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei, has been accused of graft, leading a "deviant current" that seeks to challenge the theocratic establishment, and links to a $2.6 billion bank fraud described as the biggest financial scam in Iran's history.

Ahmadinejad has rejected the accusations against his allies and Mashaei is accompanying the president on his U.N. trip.

Khamenei swiftly endorsed Ahmadinejad's disputed re-election, which created a rift among Iran's hardline ruling elites and ignited months of anti-government street protests.

When Khamenei reinstated Ahmadinejad's sacked intelligence minister in April, the president refused to go to his office for 11 days but lost the battle after Khamenei signaled that he might be dismissed.

"NO BITTER SURPRISES"

An Iranian official who asked not to be named said Khamenei's allies had warned Ahmadinejad to avoid vitriolic speeches at the United Nations, where in the past he has called for Israel's annihilation and claimed that the United States orchestrated the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington.

"Even if he gives fiery speeches or again calls for Israel to be wiped off the map, these words should not be interpreted as the views of hardline rulers," said analyst Hamid Farahvashi.

"The warning was given to prevent any bitter surprises ... that could put more pressure on the country and its leadership," he said. "But Ahmadinejad is unpredictable."

Iran's cleric-led elite is concerned above all about any spillover effect of popular uprisings against dictatorial leaders in the Arab world. They say these revolts have been inspired by Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution, although most analysts say they are secular and pro-democracy in nature.

"The main issue for Khamenei is preserving the establishment when all these regime changes are taking place in the region," said Farzi.

Iranian opposition leaders Mirhossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi have been put under house arrest since February to minimize prospects for any unrest. But the leaders insist the pro-reform movement is still alive.

Some analysts say Ahmadinejad's efforts to release the U.S. citizens could be aimed at refurbishing his international image.

"Ahmadinejad can claim that his efforts to build better ties with the world failed because of his hardline rivals," said analyst Hamidreza Bokharai.

"Any kind of backing by the West can strengthen Ahmadinejad's position in Iran," he said, because many Iranians want the Islamic Republic to open up to the West.

A political constellation of conservative elites has crystallized against Ahmadinejad, analysts say, to block his camp winning upcoming elections.

"Hardliners have aligned to block Ahmadinejad's allies to win the parliamentary election in March, which will be a litmus test for Ahmadinejad's popularity," said analyst Reza Sedghi.

"(However), he still enjoys the support of lower-income Iranians ... Ahmadinejad is like Robin hood for some Iranians because of cash handouts by the government."

Patio Decks ? 4 Easy Steps To Consider When Building Deck Stairs ...

Maybe you are thinking about replacing your damaged patio deck stairs, but are put off by the cost of hiring a professional carpenter to do it. Are the stairs for your patio decks suffering from wear and tear, and maybe even becoming dangerous, causing you to stumble and even fall? By doing the work yourself, you can save yourself a lot of money, and it isn?t actually as hard as you might think.

All you need to do to build a set of stylish, sturdy stairs yourself is to acquire some basic carpentry skills. This will also mean that you can build stairs to your own design and therefore have them just as you want them, rather than having to follow someone else?s ideas. All you have to have is the right plan, some tools and a little guidance.

For any job to be successful, planning is important, and making stairs for your deck and patio designs is no exception to this rule. Have a proper plan worked out in your mind, and make up a blueprint for the whole process. So have a careful look for the best design for your space, to suit your patio deck and which will be robust. This will make the entire building job much easier to carry out. Below is a process you can follow to help you to create this plan.

1) Position:

Think carefully about this, because the location is important. The first thing to do is to decide exactly where you are going to place your stairs. You don?t want the stairs to be placed where they are in the way of where people usually walk, so try to find a spot around your patio deck which is not normally used.

2) Step width:

If your family is large, then make the steps wide enough for two people to walk side by side on them. When deciding how wide your steps should be, take into consideration the amount of traffic the stairs will need to carry.

3) Number of steps:

This is a more complicated decision, because your steps need to be evenly spaced. Measure the overall height of the stairs, and work it out mathematically. For example, if the height is 48 inches, then you could have eight steps, with a six inch gap between them.

4) Space between steps:

This is another important decision, because it will impact on people?s comfort when they walk up and down your stairs. Smaller spacing makes for smoother movement up or down, but it can make stumbling more of a hazard.

These are the main considerations which will help in planning and building your own practical, sturdy and stylish stairs for patio decks. You can improve still further on the appearance of your patio deck stairs by making renovations such as attractive railings, or by painting them. NASA's WISE raises doubt about asteroid family believed responsible for dinosaur extinction

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2011) ? Observations from NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission indicate the family of asteroids some believed was responsible for the demise of the dinosaurs is not likely the culprit, keeping open the case on one of Earth's greatest mysteries.

While scientists are confident a large asteroid crashed into Earth approximately 65 million years ago, leading to the extinction of dinosaurs and some other life forms on our planet, they do not know exactly where the asteroid came from or how it made its way to Earth. A 2007 study using visible-light data from ground-based telescopes first suggested the remnant of a huge asteroid, known as Baptistina, as a possible suspect.

According to that theory, Baptistina crashed into another asteroid in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter about 160 million years ago. The collision sent shattered pieces as big as mountains flying. One of those pieces was believed to have impacted Earth, causing the dinosaurs' extinction.

Since this scenario was first proposed, evidence developed that the so-called Baptistina family of asteroids was not the responsible party. With the new infrared observations from WISE, astronomers say Baptistina may finally be ruled out.

"As a result of the WISE science team's investigation, the demise of the dinosaurs remains in the cold case files," said Lindley Johnson, program executive for the Near Earth Object (NEO) Observation Program at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "The original calculations with visible light estimated the size and reflectivity of the Baptistina family members, leading to estimates of their age, but we now know those estimates were off. With infrared light, WISE was able to get a more accurate estimate, which throws the timing of the Baptistina theory into question."

WISE surveyed the entire celestial sky twice in infrared light from January 2010 to February 2011. The asteroid-hunting portion of the mission, called NEOWISE, used the data to catalogue more than 157,000 asteroids in the main belt and discovered more than 33,000 new ones.

Visible light reflects off an asteroid. Without knowing how reflective the surface of the asteroid is, it's hard to accurately establish size. Infrared observations allow a more accurate size estimate. They detect infrared light coming from the asteroid itself, which is related to the body's temperature and size. Once the size is known, the object's reflectivity can be re-calculated by combining infrared with visible-light data.

The NEOWISE team measured the reflectivity and the size of about 120,000 asteroids in the main belt, including 1,056 members of the Baptistina family. The scientists calculated the original parent Baptistina asteroid actually broke up closer to 80 million years ago, half as long as originally proposed.

This calculation was possible because the size and reflectivity of the asteroid family members indicate how much time would have been required to reach their current locations -- larger asteroids would not disperse in their orbits as fast as smaller ones. The results revealed a chunk of the original Baptistina asteroid needed to hit Earth in less time than previously believed, in just about 15 million years, to cause the extinction of the dinosaurs.

"This doesn't give the remnants from the collision very much time to move into a resonance spot, and get flung down to Earth 65 million years ago," said Amy Mainzer, a study co-author and the principal investigator of NEOWISE at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena. Calif. "This process is thought to normally take many tens of millions of years." Resonances are areas in the main belt where gravity nudges from Jupiter and Saturn can act like a pinball machine to fling asteroids out of the main belt and into the region near Earth.

The asteroid family that produced the dinosaur-killing asteroid remains at large. Evidence that a 10-kilometer (about 6.2-mile) asteroid impacted Earth 65 million years ago includes a huge, crater-shaped structure in the Gulf of Mexico and rare minerals in the fossil record, which are common in meteorites but seldom found in Earth's crust. In addition to the Baptistina results, the NEOWISE study shows various main belt asteroid families have similar reflective properties. The team hopes to use NEOWISE data to disentangle families that overlap and trace their histories.

"We are working on creating an asteroid family tree of sorts," said Joseph Masiero, the lead author of the study. "We are starting to refine our picture of how the asteroids in the main belt smashed together and mixed up."

JPL manages and operated WISE for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. The spacecraft was put into hibernation mode after it scanned the entire sky twice, completing its main objectives. The principal investigator, astronomer Edward Wright, is at UCLA. The mission was selected competitively under NASA's Explorers Program managed by the agency's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. The science instrument was built by the Space Dynamics Laboratory in Logan. The spacecraft was built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. in Boulder, Colo. Science operations and data processing take place at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Caltech manages JPL for NASA.

Obama tries to look beyond Palestinian bid at UN (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Facing a potentially destabilizing diplomatic clash, President Barack Obama heads to the United Nations next week already looking beyond a potential vote on Palestinian statehood and toward laying the groundwork for the resumption of stalled Middle East peace talks.

Obama had hoped to focus his efforts at the meetings of the U.N. General Assembly on boosting the standing of Libya's former rebel leaders and touting the United Nations' role in dismantling Moammar Gadhafi's regime. But success in Libya seems likely to be overshadowed by a Palestinian push for full U.N. membership ? an effort over which Obama has little influence.

White House officials say it's still unclear what course the Palestinians will take in New York next week. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Friday that he will ask the U.N. Security Council to endorse his statehood bid, though he said he was open to other unspecified options. The U.S. has pledged to veto the statehood bid, and the Obama administration has senior diplomats in the region making a last-ditch effort to persuade the Palestinians to drop the measure.

But the White House insists its main focus is not on what happens at the U.N., but on resuming direct peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians. U.S. officials contend that those negotiations provide the only credible pathway for the Palestinians to achieve statehood.

"Whatever happens at the United Nations, there's going to have to be a process to get these two parties back to the table when we get beyond next week," White House deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes said Friday.

As part of the effort to revive the stalled negotiations, Obama will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the sidelines of the U.N. meeting next week. But whether Obama can make any progress in convincing Netanyahu to return to talks is highly uncertain, and it's unclear what bargaining power the U.S. has.

There are currently no plans for Obama to meet with Abbas in New York, and the White House said the two leaders had not spoken recently.

Thus far, there are also no plans for Netanyahu and Abbas to meet at the UN.

A U.S. official said envoys from the Middle East diplomatic Quartet ? the U.S., U.N., European Union and Russia ? planned to meet in New York Sunday to discuss the pending Palestinian bid.

It's unlikely that the Quartet could take actions on its own that could stop the Palestinians from moving forward with a statehood bid, but the official said the U.S. is hopeful the group could issue a formal statement next week laying the groundwork for restarting direct talks between the Israelis and Palestinians.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the talks.

Obama is due to arrive in New York Monday evening, after giving a speech in the Washington area announcing his deficit cutting recommendations for a joint congressional committee.

The president's meetings at the U.N. kick into high gear on Tuesday with an emphasis on Libya, where opposition forces have unseated Gadhafi after four decades of rule.

Eager to burnish the credentials of Libya's new leadership, Obama will hold his first meeting with Mahmoud Jibril, prime minister of the Transitional National Council. He and other world leaders will also convene a high-level meeting on Libya where the TNC will outline its plans for a post-Gadhafi nation.

The White House sees next week's meetings as an opportunity to promote the U.N.'s role in the months-long Libya effort as a model for future interventions. In March, the Security Council swiftly passed a resolution establishing a no-fly zone over Libya and authorizing all necessary action needed to protect civilians, a measure the U.S. credits with saving countless Libyan lives.

"The U.N. has a credible role to play in these issues, and the international community can prevent mass atrocities," Rhodes said.

On Friday, the U.N. voted to give Libya's seat in the world body to the former rebels.

Other key meetings on Obama's schedule at the U.N. include one-on-one talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, their first meeting since Obama outlined plans to withdraw more than 20,000 U.S. troops from Afghanistan by the end of next summer. And Obama will meet with the prime minister of Turkey, whose increasingly strained relationship with Israel is a growing concern for the U.S.

Obama also will meet with leaders from Britain, France, Brazil, Japan and South Sudan, the world's newest nation.

The president will address the General Assembly Wednesday morning and also speak at the annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative later that day.

Underscoring the ever-present tug of domestic politics, Obama is also expected to use his time in New York to attend fundraisers for the Democratic National Committee and his re-election campaign.

You Can Succeed with Your Next Home Improvement Job ...

Your home is more than your shelter, it?s your security and your protection. Therefore, it?s a wise plan to take proper care of your home. While some people enjoy working on their homes others would rather go to the dentist. No matter how you feel about it, it?s something that has to be done on occasion. Just focus on each step as it comes along and you?ll be done before you know it. If you follow this great advice you?ll see that it isn?t nearly as painful as you imagine.

For example. you might be tempted to have home alarm system installed by yourself thinking that it is too expensive to have professionals come to your home. You would be pleasantly surprised that today?s market, there are many vendors that would offer a wide variety of models and services that would cater to your needs. One clear choice is: apx security reviews. They are well positioned in the industry with years of expertise. As far as costs is concerned, they offer very competitive pricing ? pricing that would make it well worth it to have them involved in any home security project.

By implementing a home improvement project that will help cut the cost of utilities, you will greatly increase the value of your investment. Everyone has seen how the prices of gas, oil and electricity are evolving. Everything seems to be headed in a single direction, up, which is why you should really think about some ways you can save energy.

The thermal insulation in your home can be improved, especially in the vicinity of heaters and hot water pipes. Good energy efficient windows are also great to save on energy and there are plenty available on the market. They are pretty pricey but it is worth it and you can spread out the costs over a number of seasons if it?s easier for you. Actually, there is an entirely new industry developing in this area of energy efficiency. If you?re suffering from frequent power interruptions then perhaps you?ve overloaded your breakers. Degraded circuits in your system are other problems you could be experiencing. Another possibility is a household appliance that is quickly outliving its usefulness. You may need to contact an electrician to pinpoint the problem in situations like this.
It can be simple to identify the problem if the same breaker is the one that always seems to be tripping. Safety should be your primary concern though.

In the field of indoor climate control, things are always being improved with more and more new technology being developed and implemented regularly. The ultimate objective is to have a highly energy efficient system to heat and cool a building. The more advanced climate control designs will involve a pretty investment. You should be looking at this investment strategically. Over time, your energy savings will be recouped, and after that it will only be a plus. For example, these new units have selective climate control.
The newer systems can be programmed to heat or cool certain areas of your house which only represents energy savings.

Home improvements involving automation attract us a lot because the results are just fun to have. The only things that limit what you can do with this system that allows for so many functions are your creativity and your imagination.

How much can you afford when buying a home?

If you can afford to rent and have cash for a down payment you can probably afford to buy. But the easiest way to find out how much you can afford is to get requalified or preapproved for your loan.

Pre-qualified ? To get pre-qualified you may need to provide the leaner with documentation.?

  • checking or bank account statements
  • a recent pay stub from work
  • the last two years of income tax forms.

If you go online for your preapproval, many online lenders will ask you for that information answer them with the full truth and the paperwork will be done during the verification of the loan. At the pre-qualification stage there is no commitment they just basically do the numbers and see how much you can afford. This is a great position so that you know what pool you can play in.

Pre-Approved ? Here is where you actually get a commitment from the bank that they will fund your loan providng the house apraises in that value assuming your paperwork all checks out.

If you need a lender we have a few in our database that we work with contact us and will direct you to one that will serve your needs. Call today 206-334-8773

Levi Johnston: Bristol Palin Got Pregnant Just to Spite Sarah!

In his new book, Levi Johnston claims Bristol Palin not only wanted to get pregnant, she did so to spite her famous mom, then-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Deer in the Headlights: My Life in Sarah Palin's Crosshairs is due out next week, and within its pages, Johnston airs more dirty Palin laundry than ever.

Considering it's what Levi does for a living, that's saying something!

Hot Levi Johnston Pic

Levi Johnston says Bristol Palin was angry when she discovered Sarah was expecting her fifth child (son Trig) and felt she should be the one preggo instead.

According to Johnston, Bristol told him in March 2008, "let's get pregnant."

Whether that HOT directive actually took place or not, he obliged all right.

Johnston also refutes Bristol's earlier claim that she lost her virginity drunk on a camping trip, saying they were sexually active earlier in their relationship.

He also writes that he was "too dumb" to use protection. That we believe.

Despite claims by the Palins, Johnston writes that he was present for Tripp's birth, and that Sarah Palin wanted to be called Mommy Sarah (not grandma).

He also insists that Todd Palin reacted angrily when he learned Bristol was pregnant at the age of 17, telling Johnston he had to quit school and get a job.

Johnston also writes that Sarah Palin wanted to adopt Tripp as her own to "avoid a scandal." Whether she really attempted to conceal it or not is unclear.

What is clear is that this guy has extended his 15 minutes impressively. Between this and Mercede Johnston in Playboy, this family knows how to milk it!

Mercede has also claimed that Bristol got pregnant on purpose.
