Westmoreland Credit Union reaches out

Dalton Laing, Gleaner Writer

SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland:The Westmoreland Co-operative Credit Union Limited (WCCUL) participated in the islandwide outreach initiative of the Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League (JCCUL) in observing a Soup and Soap Day at the local infirmary in Savanna-la-Mar.

A team from WCCUL went to the infirmary where the 82 residents - 47 males and 35 females - were treated to soup at lunchtime. They were also presented with toiletries.

Katrina Grant, promotions and publicity manager at the WCCUL, said, "We are simply fulfilling our social responsibility as a corporate entity."

Grant also said that the outreach was merely one of the credit union's activities, which also include Grade Six Achievement Test bursaries, financing medical expenses for the less fortunate, providing houses and other necessities for the needy, and sponsorship of events.

Matron Janet Carol was grateful for the gesture. She, however, expressed concerns about the state of the facility.

Poor conditions

"We are grateful for the new female ward, but the male one is old and dilapidated," she said. In addition, the building that is being used as the administrative offices was reconditioned for use as the dining area, so there is need for office space.

The Soup and Soap Day was in keeping with Credit Union Week in Westmoreland, which started on Sunday with a church service at the Central Tabernacle Deliverance Centre in Savanna-la-Mar, followed by a series of town meetings and an appreciation day for members.

During the church service, General Manager Christine Sinclair-Haughton outlined the benefits to be derived from membership with the WCCUL.

"The credit union movement is here to serve you and to provide the path to your financial freedom," Sinclair-Haughton said.

Hometown boy Freese is World Series MVP

By DAVE SKRETTA

updated 12:15 a.m. ET Oct. 29, 2011

ST. LOUIS - David Freese, the hometown boy made good, is the MVP of the World Series.

Down to their final strike in Game 6, the Cardinals' reluctant hero delivered a tying two-run triple in the ninth inning Thursday night. Freese then did one better: a leadoff homer in the 11th that gave St. Louis a dramatic win over the Rangers and forced the first Game 7 since 2002.

Freese, also the NL championship series MVP, capped his memorable October by hitting a two-run double in the first inning Friday night to tie the Texas Rangers at 2-all. He also drew a pair of walks that helped lead to runs, and the Cardinals held on for a 6-2 win and their 11th championship.

"This means everything," Freese said.

When the final out was made, Freese threw his arms in the air and dashed for the mound, where he joined a happy scrum as confetti floated down from the upper reaches of Busch Stadium.

"This is why you keep battling," Freese said. "Sometimes things don't work out, you get injured, you do stupid stuff, but you try to stay on path. You surround yourself with guys like we have on this team. I'm so glad to be part of this."

Freese batted .348 in the World Series, with seven RBIs, three doubles and one big homer. He's the fourth Cardinals player to win the MVP award, joining Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Gibson in 1964 and '67, catcher Darrell Porter in 1982 and David Eckstein in their 2006 victory over Detroit.

"You learn from all these veterans about how to go about this game," Freese said, "and I wouldn't be here without them."

Freese could just as well be the MVP of the entire postseason.

The kid who grew up in a St. Louis suburb hit a three-run homer in Game 6 of the NLCS against Milwaukee, the first act in his coming out party. His performance in Act 2 against the Rangers made him the sixth player to be MVP of a championship series and the World Series.

Often lost in a high-scoring lineup that includes Albert Pujols, Matt Holliday and Lance Berkman, Freese left his impression on baseball's grandest stage out of necessity.

Holliday struggled most of the series before spraining his right wrist during Game 6, taking him off the roster Friday. Pujols was intentionally walked whenever he was a threat.

That left the offense to Freese, who had given up on baseball after high school, spurning a scholarship offer from Missouri to simply be a college student. He even rebuffed the Tigers' coaches when they called midway through his first semester to find out whether he'd changed his mind.

It wasn't until about a year out of high school that the itch to play finally returned.

Freese gave in and enrolled at St. Louis Community College-Meremec, and his play there caught the attention of the coaching staff at South Alabama. Freese blossomed into the Padres' ninth-round draft pick in 2006, and a trade to the Cardinals eventually brought him home.

"If you wrote a story like that ? a guy gets traded, comes back to his hometown, he's a hero ? if you sent that in the script, it would get thrown back in your face," Commissioner Bud Selig said.

This wasn't a perfect fairy tale, though. That would be too easy.

Freese needed season-ending surgery to repair a torn tendon in his right ankle last year, and he broke his left hand when he was hit by a pitch earlier this season. He was hit by another pitch in August and sustained a concussion.

Each time, he came back better than before.

He was at his best against Texas.

In the World Series opener, with the game tied in the sixth inning, Freese delivered a timely double. He alertly moved to third base on a wild pitch, allowing him to score easily for the eventual winning run on Allen Craig's single to right field.

Freese scored the Cardinals' only run in a 2-1 loss in Game 2, and then drove in a pair of runs in a 16-7 victory in Game 3 ? a performance that will be forever overshadowed by Pujols' three homers.

Nobody could overshadow Freese in Game 6.

After committing a critical error when an easy popup bounced out of his glove, Freese more than made up for it with his bat. Down to his final strike, his two-run triple in the ninth forced extra innings. In the 11th, he joined Bill Mazeroski, Carlton Fisk, Kirby Puckett and Joe Carter as the only players to hit a game-winning homer in Game 6 or later of a Fall Classic.

That's pretty select company.

Much like the company he'll enjoy as MVP of the World Series.

"I've had plenty of days in my life where I'd thought, you know, I wouldn't even be close to being a big leaguer," Freese said. "I'm here because of everyone around me. They put so much trust in me to accomplish, not just baseball, but stuff in life. To do this, I'm just full of joy."

Melbourne will become a magnet for the world's best and brightest brain researchers after the official opening of the Melbourne Brain Centre at The University of Melbourne Parkville by the Premier Ted Baillieu and Federal MP Michael Danby on Monday.

The $225M Melbourne Brain Centre is the largest neuroscience research centre in the Southern Hemisphere.

Across its three sites, it hosts 700 staff from around the globe who are working towards a better understanding of brain disorders.

The Melbourne Brain Centre will use a collaborative approach to improve understanding of disorders and conditions affecting the brain.

It is home to the Florey Neuroscience Institutes, the Mental Health Research Institute, and the University of Melbourne's neuroscientists. It also partners with Royal Melbourne Hospital and Austin Health to take neurosciences to the bedside.

Researchers working at the centre will investigate a broad range of conditions affecting the brain, including Multiple Sclerosis, stroke, Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, trauma, depression and anxiety, epilepsy and Motor Neuron disease.

The Parkville facility, opened by Premier Ted Baillieu and Federal Member for Melbourne Ports Michael Danby, is the final centrepiece in a project that received major funding from the State and Federal governments.

Speaking after the ceremony, Mr Baillieu said the centre will strengthen Melbourne's and Victoria's reputations as first-rate career destinations for medical researchers.

"The Victorian Government invested $53 million in this project to reinforce Victoria's ability to attract and retain some of the best scientific minds in the world," Mr Baillieu said.

The Centre is playing a key role in attracting leading scientists to come to Australia or retaining talented Australian researchers who might have otherwise moved or stayed overseas.

Dr Ben Emery is an Australian neuroscience researcher who returned from Stanford University California to continue his research at the Melbourne Brain Centre.

Dr Emery's research focuses on the role of myelin in the brain and its role in Multiple Sclerosis.

"Being able to return to Australia and continue this important work in this fantastic Centre will assist me and my team to investigate myelin as a new treatment target to reverse the nerve damage done in MS."

Dr Rachel Hill is investigating the differences in males and females suffering Schizophrenia. She spent some time in the USA but returned to Australia to continue her research.

"The Melbourne Brain Centre offers fantastic opportunities for collaboration between researchers," she said.

"Just prior to working in the Centre, if I wanted to meet with a colleague from another laboratory it would involve quite a bit of coordination and travelling to another site. Now they might be working at the next bench in the same laboratory. Having such great access to so many talented researchers made it an easy choice to continue my research career in Melbourne," she said.

The Melbourne Brain Centre was co-funded by the Victorian Government ($53M), the Federal Government's Department ($76.8M), three project partners and philanthropy.

Precise gene therapy without a needle

ScienceDaily (Oct. 16, 2011) ? For the first time, researchers have found a way to inject a precise dose of a gene therapy agent directly into a single living cell without a needle.

The technique uses electricity to "shoot" bits of therapeutic biomolecules through a tiny channel and into a cell in a fraction of a second.

L. James Lee and his colleagues at Ohio State University describe the technique in the online edition of the journal Nature Nanotechnology, where they report successfully inserting specific doses of an anti-cancer gene into individual leukemia cells to kill them.

They have dubbed the method "nanochannel electroporation," or NEP.

"NEP allows us to investigate how drugs and other biomolecules affect cell biology and genetic pathways at a level not achievable by any existing techniques," said Lee, who is the Helen C. Kurtz Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and director of the NSF Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center for Affordable Nanoengineering of Polymeric Biomedical Devices at Ohio State.

There have long been ways to insert random amounts of biomaterial into bulk quantities of cells for gene therapy. And fine needles can inject specific amounts of material into large cells. But most human cells are too small for even the smallest needles to be of any use.

NEP gets around the problem by suspending a cell inside an electronic device with a reservoir of therapeutic agent nearby. Electrical pulses push the agent out of the reservoir and through a nanometer- (billionth of a meter) scale channel in the device, through the cell wall, and into the cell. Researchers control the dose by adjusting the number of pulses and the width of the channel.

In Nature Nanotechnology, they explain how they constructed prototype devices using polymer stamps. They used individual strands of DNA as templates for the nanometer-sized channels.

Lee invented the technique for uncoiling strands of DNA and forming them into precise patterns so that they could work as wires in biologically based electronics and medical devices. But for this study, gold-coated DNA strands were stretched between two reservoirs and then etched away, in order to leave behind a nano-channel of precise dimensions connecting the reservoirs within the polymeric device.

Electrodes in the channels turn the device into a tiny circuit, and electrical pulses of a few hundred volts travel from the reservoir with the therapeutic agent through the nano-channel and into a second reservoir with the cell. This creates a strong electric field at the outlet of the nano-channel, which interacts with the cell's natural electric charge to force open a hole in the cell membrane -- one large enough to deliver the agent, but small enough not to kill the cell.

In tests, they were able to insert agents into cells in as little as a few milliseconds, or thousandths of a second.

First, they tagged bits of synthetic DNA with fluorescent molecules, and used NEP to insert them into human immune cells. After a single 5-millisecond pulse, they began see spots of fluorescence scattered within the cells. They tested different pulse lengths up to 60 milliseconds -- which filled the cells with fluorescence.

To test whether NEP could deliver active therapeutic agents, they inserted bits of therapeutic RNA into leukemia cells. Pulses as short as 5 milliseconds delivered enough RNA to kill some of the cells. Longer pulses -- approaching 10 milliseconds -- killed almost all of them. They also inserted some harmless RNA into other leukemia cells for comparison, and those cells lived.

At the moment, the process is best suited for laboratory research, Lee said, because it only works on one cell or several cells at a time. But he and his team are working on ways to inject many cells simultaneously. They are currently developing a mechanical cell-loading system that would inject up to 100,000 cells at once, which would potentially make clinical diagnostics and treatments possible.

"We hope that NEP could eventually become a tool for early cancer detection and treatment -- for instance, inserting precise amounts of genes or proteins into stem cells or immune cells to guide their differentiation and changes -- without the safety concerns caused by overdosing, and then placing the cells back in the body for cell-based therapy," Lee added.

He sees potential applications for diagnosing and treating leukemia, lung cancer, and other tumors. He's working with researchers at Ohio State's Comprehensive Cancer Center to explore those possibilities.

Libya government says its flag flies over Bani Walid

Libyan interim government forces said on Monday they had raised the country's new flag over Bani Walid, but it was not clear if they had captured the whole town, one of the last bastions of pro-Moammar Gadhafi loyalists.

Bani Walid and Gadhafi's home town, Sirte, are the only two towns in the country where there is still armed resistance to the rule of the National Transitional Council (NTC).

"We have reached the city center (of Bani Walid) and have raised the flag," Colonel Abdullah Naker, head of the Tripoli Revolutionist Council, told Reuters on Sunday.

Fighters taking part in the assault on Bani Walid also told Reuters they had entered the town, which is nestled into rocky hills some 90 miles south of Tripoli.

Bani Walid is an ancestral home to the Warfalla, Libya's biggest tribe and one of its most politically influential. The Warfalla number about one million out of the country's six million population and were traditional supporters of Gadhafi.

The town has been under siege for weeks, with hundreds of Gadhafi loyalists dug into its steep valleys and hills resisting advancing interim government forces.

World Blog: Misrata slowly gets back to normal

As well as ordering the military assault, NTC officials have been negotiating with tribal leaders inside Bani Walid for its surrender.

A group claiming to represent the people of the town offered a truce to Libya's new government on Monday. The tribal groups said they would pledge loyalty to the NTC and take over the town, but demanded in return the NTC withdraw its forces from the area and lift the siege.

It was not clear how the government would respond or whether NTC forces had already completely captured the town.

Sirte fights on
In Sirte, where Gaddafi loyalists have been under siege for weeks, there was little or no sign of the disorganized NTC forces making any progress on Monday and, amid chaos and confusion, in some places they had even been pushed back.

A doctor for the medical aid charity Medecins Sans Frontieres in Sirte has estimated 10,000 people remain trapped in the city of 75,000. Many are women and children, some are sick or injured.

NTC tanks and rockets bombarded a small area of central Sirte where they have boxed in the remaining Gaddafi loyalists. Libya's new leaders say they will only begin the transition to democracy after they capture the city.

Frustration is growing on the front line. Some fighters are irritated their commanders have not ordered a big push to take the rest of the city.

There is also anger between government forces from Misrata to the west and Benghazi to the east, who have accused each other of hitting their allies in "friendly fire" incidents.

"What we are trying to do is to limit attacks from the east and west to avoid friendly fire, and instead attack from the south," said Mohammad Al Sabty, a field commander.

"We have lost a lot of martyrs in recent days," said Mustafa Salim from a Misrata brigade. When Misrata units get close to Benghazi units "it gets harder," he said. "They fire at us and we fire at them."

Many NTC fighters abandon their positions at nightfall for more comfortable quarters further from the front line. That allows Gaddafi's men to infiltrate the lines during the night and fire at them, sometimes from behind.

Government forces captured 15 Gaddafi loyalist fighters on Monday, all of them black, a Reuters witness said. Gaddafi armed many sub-Saharan Africans to fight for him and black people have been subject to arbitrary reprisals by the NTC forces.

Some government fighters present tried to hit the newly captured prisoners, but were held back by more senior officers and the 15 men were marched off to the rear as NTC forces laid down suppressing fire at nearby snipers.

The new government's forces have been accused of mistreating prisoners and Amnesty International said in a report last week it was in danger of repeating some of the abuses of Gaddafi's rule, particularly through the use of arbitrary detention.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said he would raise the issue at a meeting later in the day with the head of the NTC in Tripoli. "It's very important they keep the moral authority by treating people well," Hague told reporters.

The often chaotic struggle for Sirte has killed scores of people, left thousands homeless and laid waste to much of what was once a showpiece Mediterranean city where Gadhafi entertained foreign leaders.

Free of charge Paid On the internet SurveysEarn Effortless Extra ...

If you are searching to make some simple additional income online, going the route of free of charge paid online surveys has a lot of benefits. First off, to qualify as a paid survey taker you only require to be a consumer, 18 or older and have sufficient laptop or computer abilities to be able to send and receive emails! That?s easy criteria to meet. Paid surveys are a huge business on the Net, with thousands of new surveys getting created each and every week. Significant organizations spend over $200 billion a year on advertising and promotion in the U. S. alone. Several hundred million gets allocated to market place analysis, to guide and measure how that money is becoming spent. Marketplace researchers use surveys to measure consumer preferences and opinions, hence the large number of surveys being produced. To encourage people to take the surveys and actually fill out the survey questionnaires, most surveys are made on a compensated basis.

You get paid for participating in totally free paid online surveys. Payments per survey range from $5 to $75 or far more, with most becoming in the $10 to $25 range. That?s not an entire lot of dollars, but when you consider that the typical $10 survey only takes 58 minutes to fill out, the return on your time for taking cost-free paid online surveys is quite high. If you take a $10 and a $25 survey every single day, it will add up to over $1,000 a month for 1520 minutes a day of work sitting at your computer and filling out survey questionnaires. Most regular survey takers report incomes of $200 to $600 a month, with numerous reporting incomes of over $1,000 a month. The challenge in paid survey function is getting an excellent list of survey makers. There are more than 700 survey makers in the U. S. and more than three,000 worldwide. About 20 of the surveys getting made are legitimate on the internet paid surveys that pay in money, on time and respect your privacy. One more 40 are a bit less desirable but nonetheless worthwhile. The final 40 are lowpaynopay time wasters that you will want to stay away from. However, these pay recruiting fees to companies that supply cost-free lists and to any individual who can send them fresh new recruits. To make funds with free paid on-line surveys you have to invest time identifying these and culling your list. The very best way to get a great list is to join a paid survey membership site. There are a couple of hundred of these that sustain lists for their membership. For a smallish onetime fee they will give you access to a copy of their current list. You typically make the fee back with the 1st 23 surveys you take. You only want to deal with 1 of the 70 or so websites that provide a strong moneyback guarantee. If they won?t stand behind their services, why really should you take the risk? From these with powerful guarantees, choose 1 with a low refund rate. Refund rates tell you what their clients think of their services. Low refund rates mean customers who are making cash and pleased. High refund rates mean several unhappy clients, demanding their cash back. So pick on with a low (36) refund rate. Keep away from any with refund rates as high as 910, or refund rates that are unknown. (Unknown generally indicates high! )When you decide on your paid survey membership website and get your copy of their list, open a free email address just for your free paid online surveys function. Then sign up with as many of the survey makers on that list as you can. The much more you sign up with, the more surveys you will be provided and the a lot more dollars you will make. For much more data about free of charge paid on the internet surveys and how to uncover sites with great lists, follow the links below.

Affected person Rights Nursing Assistants Want To Be Aware Of ...

Nursing assistants take great care in providing sufferers with the best possible care. They help with assembly their fundamental needs on no matter degree that particular patient needs. Nursing assistants typically need to make knowledgeable choices for the sufferers they care for. However, it is rather necessary for all Nursing Assistants to pay attention to rights of all patients. Nursing assistants have to familiarize themselves with these rights and respect them.

Patients have the correct to be fully informed on the time of admission and all through their keep in the facility. As the Nursing Assistant, you may be asked questions by patients that you?re not certified to answer. Acknowledge this with the affected person, let them know who can reply their query, and doc the information in their chart. Most data given to patients and their household will come instantly from the doctor or the charge Nurse.

All sufferers have the proper to refuse treatment. This can be difficult for Nursing Assistants as they really need to be as helpful to the patient as possible. Nonetheless, in the event that they do not want your help you may?t force them. You need to report this to your supervisor as well as doc the data in the patient?s chart.

If a patient will not be proud of the care they are receiving, they?ve the best to inquire about grievance procedures and file a complaint. If an affected person voices a criticism to you, present them with the data to file a proper complaint. The policies and procedures for doing so will range be medical facility.

Sufferers shall not encounter bodily or mental abuse from anybody whereas staying in a medical facility. This contains chemical and physical restraints. Any such incidents shall be reported by the Nursing Assistant instantly to the supervisor, and infrequently the native police department.

It?s the duty of all Nursing Assistants to offer each patient with confidentiality and dignity. They should be treated with respect and privacy in regards to their private information. Keeping something you find out in the medical setting confined to other professionals who must know the scenario is the best advice.

Sufferers have the appropriate to participate in the faith of their choice. They are allowed to have visitors from the Church in addition to non-public visitors as long as it does not intervene with medical advice. The Nursing Assistant must be taught to work the wants of the patient around such visits.

Providing quality care to individuals is a really rewarding challenge to Nursing Assistants. Understand that each affected person has their very own personality, wishes, and needs. They need these to proceed being met even whereas they?re in a medical facility. This allows them to take care of a routine and sense of normalcy. The longer you take care of an affected person, the higher you will understand how one can finest look after them.

It?s tough to balance the medical wants of an affected person with their very own private desires. Nonetheless, it?s possible to offer both by respecting the patient?s rights. This can make sure that they perceive and denied requests are finished purely in the perfect curiosity of their well being. Nursing Assistants are often considered an ally by patients. They assist scale back any points between the patient and Nursing employees in addition to the affected person and physician.

Kenya: Alleged pirates abduct elderly Frenchwoman

(AP) ? Suspected Somali pirates driving their boat under the cover of darkness kidnapped an elderly Frenchwoman on a resort island in northern Kenya early Saturday, officials said. The woman often uses a wheelchair, according to the resident.

The Kenyan navy and police were chasing the suspected boat at sea, said Ambrose Munyasia, a top police official on the coast.

Two Kenyan boats have the suspected pirate boat surrounded, with four men and the kidnapped woman on board, said Tourism Minister Najib Balala. A plane overhead is also monitoring the situation, he said.

"We are just concerned about the safety of the lady," said Balala. He identified her as Marie Dedieu.

Munyasia said that he had information that the French government is set to join the chase. He said he was optimistic the woman would be rescued soon.

The French Foreign ministry said in a statement that the woman is in her 60s and was taken by several men who are "most likely from Somalia."

The ministry said they are "working with the Kenyan authorities, who have mobilized significant air and sea resources in order to free our compatriot."

If pirates are involved, it would be the second such attack near the popular tourist town of Lamu in a month. In early September, pirates shot dead a British man and kidnapped his wife from a resort near Lamu.

People near the scene of the kidnapping heard gunshots around 3 a.m., Lamu resident Muhidin Athman said. Athman said the Frenchwoman owns a house on Manda Island and lives there half the year. She gets around with the help of a wheelchair or personal assistants, Athman said.

Police were at the scene Saturday morning.

Manda Island is just across the channel from Lamu, an old resort town. Two kidnappings within a month have the potential to greatly harm the tourist trade in the area just before the busy holiday season.

Pirates once focused primarily on big ships at sea, but in recent years have also attacked private yachts, capturing Europeans or Americans on private trips.

As U.S. and European navies have increased their patrols of the Indian Ocean, and as large ships have increased their on-board defenses, pirates may be looking for easier targets to keep ransom payments coming in.

Pirates kidnapped and held a British couple ? the Chandlers ? for more than a year.

"It's profit-motived action. As we know the British couple we captured before paid huge ransoms, so sometimes these targets are a big gain that gives you more than ships," a man who identified himself as a pirate commander named Bile Hussein told The Associated Press last week.

Gas explosion at hotel in Islamabad injures six (Reuters)

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) ? An apparent gas explosion at a hotel in a commercial area of the Pakistani capital Islamabad on Thursday injured six people, rescue officials said.

While the blast on the Citi Hotel's fifth floor was still being investigated, senior police official Beni-Amin Khan said the cause was "apparently" a gas leak.

"Apparently, it was caused by a gas leakage," he said. "There is no smell of explosives and gas is still emitting from one pipe. However, we are still checking."

Six people were wounded in the blast, but none was seriously injured. The explosion damaged four rooms in the hotel, and video from the scene showed sidewalks littered with shattered glass.

Plastic 'flying carpet' takes off

The sheet is lifted by the air packets, and propelled forwards

A miniature magic carpet made of plastic has taken flight in a laboratory at Princeton University.

The 10-cm sheet of smart transparency is driven by "ripple power"; waves of electrical current flex a thin, 10cm sheet, driving thin pockets of air from front to rear underneath.

The prototype, described in Applied Physics Letters, moves at speeds of around a centimetre per second.

Improvements to the design could raise that to as much as a metre per second.

The device's creator, graduate student Noah Jafferis, says he was inspired by a mathematical paper he read shortly after starting his PhD studies at Princeton.

He abandoned what would have been a fashionable project printing electronic circuits with nano-inks for one that seemed to have more in common with 1001 Nights than 21st-Century engineering.

Prof James Sturm, who leads Mr Jafferis' research group, conceded that at times the project seemed foolhardy.

"What was difficult was controlling the precise behaviour of the sheet as it deformed at high frequencies," he told the BBC.

"Without the ability to predict the exact way it would flex, we couldn't feed in the right electrical currents to get the propulsion to work properly."

What followed was a two year digression attaching sensors to every part of the material so as to fine-tune its performance through a series of complex feedbacks.

But once that was mastered, the waveform of the undulating matched that prescribed by the theory, and the wafting motions gave life to the tiny carpet.

In the paper describing the design, Mr Jafferis and his co-authors are careful to keep the word "flying" in inverted commas, because the resulting machine has more in common with a hovercraft than an aeroplane.

"It has to keep close to the ground," Mr Jafferis explained to the BBC's Science in Action, "because the air is then trapped between the sheet and the ground. As the waves move along the sheet it basically pumps the air out the back." That is the source of the thrust.

Ray hope

Harvard University's Lakshminarayanan Mahadevan, who wrote the 2007 paper in Physical Review Letters that inspired the whole project, expressed a mixture of surprise and delight at the Princeton team's success.

"Noah has gone beyond our simple theory and actually built a device that works," he told the BBC "And what's more, it behaves, at least qualitatively, as we had predicted."

Mr Jafferis points out that the prototype is limited because tiny conducting threads anchor it to heavy batteries, so it's free to move only a few centimetres. But he is already working on a solar-powered upgrade that could freely fly over large distances.

The advantage of this kind of propulsion, he argues, is that unlike jets, propellers and hovercraft, there are no moving components like cogs and gears that rub against each other.

"The ideal use would be some kind of dusty, grimy environment where moving parts would get gummed up and stop," he explained.

That said, he laughingly admits that with the existing materials, a flying carpet powerful enough to carry a person would need a wingspan of 50 metres - not the best vehicle to take on the streets just yet.

On the other hand, preliminary calculations suggest that there is enough atmosphere on the planet Mars to send floating rovers scudding over its dusty surface.

Meanwhile, Prof Mahadevan looks forward to sophisticated improvements in the near future, suggesting the approach could progress to "mimicking the beautiful two-dimensional undulations of the skate or manta ray".

You can listen to Noah Jafferis describe his flying carpet on the BBC World Service programme Science in Action.

Bipolar Disorder Checklist ? I Think I Might Be Bipolar

Bipolar disorder can be a difficult thing to spot, because it contains both depressive and manic symptoms. This article will explore common symptoms for those who have the expertise to help you think more.

Bipolar disorder consists of both manic and depressive states. Please note, you could make a lot of the time and the experience of others only occasionally, and it would still be considered bipolar.

Or a manic state of mania typically consists ofby:

An elevated mood
Decreased need for sleep
Sudden weight loss
Impulsive
Ruthless
Poor concentration

Rereading of these symptoms, you can imagine, all experiences at one time or another and you are right. To be serious as a clinical manic state, symptoms must.

A state of depression typically consists of:

A depressed mood
Sleepy
Loss of interest
Decreased motivation
NotDesire for social

This overview of the symptoms is certainly not exhaustive and only serves to give you an idea of ??what you are looking for. I also want to emphasize that in order to satisfy a condition clinically depressed need to check you will be able to determine if a negative value on your life. For example, a state to deny the depression out of the way to work. Another example would be if they would start to your marriage or relationship of these effectsaround you in a negative way.

If you find that you are bipolar, to believe and I saw the symptoms that have had a negative impact on your life, I encourage you to seek professional help. Bipolar disorder is treatable, there is hope!
