Going into Friday night?s 3A state regional game at Rogers High School, Lake Washington had one goal ?? the dome or home. The Kangs boys basketball team accomplished their goal, making it to the second round of the state tournament. The team beat Wilson 51-40 to advance.
?We call it home or the dome. That?s what its been about all this week ? home or the Dome,? said Kangs head coach Brian Lund. ?During the season there is only so much coaching you can do before you just leave it to them. Matt Staudacher, he hurt himself in practice yesterday, so he was at the doctor last night with his shoulder. He?s a warrior; he went out there today and showed us that. So we?re going to take it easy this week, practice is going to be easy because of that. We saw what could happen.?
Against Wilson, Lake Washington was down most of the first quarter, but pulled ahead at the last second, thanks to a buzzer shot from Staudacher for a 14-13 lead.
From there the team went on a 16-5 run to end the half up 30-18 over the Rams.
?Within the first five minutes I thought eventually, our offense would stay how it is, but our defense is going to work those things out,? said Lund. ?We were getting the easy lay ups and so on the bench we just said great look, because we?re not throwing something up and fading it away, where I?d be like uh oh. The kids stuck to the game plan, they are very disciplined.?
After the break, Wilson hit the court strong, outscoring the Kangs 10-8 in the third quarter, but Lake Washington didn?t back down, hitting 13 points in the fourth quarter to take the win.
?What we did at half time is talking about how the score is zero zero,? said the coach. ?It wasn?t a good third, but we tried to change their minds the next quarter that it?s about slowing your brain down while the game is going 100 miles an hour, your brain has to slow down. That?s what they did.?
Darien Nelson-Henry had 25 points during the game, with Staudacher adding 16. Cody Bernstein had four points, with Drew Heimdahl, Guy Lynott and Jeff Staudacher all posting two points for the team.
The team moves forward to play on March 1 at the Tacoma Dome in the 3A state tournament. The WIAA will announce draws for teams on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 3 p.m.

The allegations were contained in two documents, labeled ?Proposed Findings of Violations,? obtained Friday in a public records request by several media outlets. While the documents use language that indicates the NCAA and the university agree to certain points, an athletic department spokesman says the university does not acknowledge any violations.
The NCAA has been looking into Oregon?s recruiting practices since questions arose over a 2010 payment of $25,000 to Willie Lyles and his Houston-based recruiting service. The information that Oregon said Lyles provided for the fee was largely outdated.
The draft, which is heavily redacted, suggests Oregon?s use of three scouting services did not conform with NCAA rules, and the Ducks exceeded the number of coaches allowed to recruit.

CONCORD, N.H. ? Legally blind since she was 9, Chrissy Fairbanks just got word she?s losing the $363 state welfare check she got each month from New Hampshire because she gets federal assistance due to her disability.
The 31-year-old Keene resident says her girls, ages 11 and 12, are taking the news well that their clothes will come from the clearance rack and there will be no more trips to the ice skating rink.
?I already sat down with the girls and told them we were going to have a budget cut. The grabbing something to eat when we go out walking isn?t going to happen,? she said.
Of the 5,600 New Hampshire families that receive state welfare assistance, Fairbanks is among 1,136 families who will lose that aid because the state is counting Supplemental Security Income for residents too disabled to work in calculating their welfare grant. Another 420 people will receive reduced welfare benefits as a result, said state Family Assistance Director Terry Smith.
The law also affects two other groups by implementing a less generous application of how earnings are counted. As a result, 103 disabled people receiving state aid will lose their monthly grant, averaging about $115, while 260 will see their grants cut about $80 per month. Another five elderly residents will lose $126 per month in state help and 10 will have their monthly grants cut by $ 106. The state programs comply with a Social Security Act mandate to supplement federal disability programs.
Idaho is the only other state besides New Hampshire that includes SSI income in calculating household income to determine welfare eligibility, according to Liz Schott, senior fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Schott said Idaho began including SSI income many years ago. Wisconsin and Alaska count some SSI income under certain circumstances. Last year, Washington welfare officials? attempt to count SSI income and shut off state welfare to 7,500 families was reversed by litigation and legislative action, said Schott.
Minnesota, West Virginia and North Carolina either tried or considered counting SSI income but rejected the policy, said Schott.
?It just penalizes the most vulnerable families. Of all the things states have done, very few have gone here,? said Schott.
SSI is not Social Security and is not based on prior work. It is financed by general funds of the U.S. Treasury, according to the Social Security Administration. Adult recipients are people with limited income and resources who are disabled, blind or age 65 or older. Disabled children also can get SSI.
Those who receive SSI income range from people like Fairbanks with a physical disability to the mentally ill, said Michael Skibbie, policy director at the Disabilities Rights Center in New Hampshire.
?These benefit levels are fractions of what you or I would consider necessary for a reasonable life. People are realistically concerned about becoming homeless,? he said of the state cuts.
Fairbanks? $698 monthly SSI check is above the $665 welfare threshold to qualify for assistance for her daughters under the Financial Assistance for Needy Families Program funded by the state and federal governments. The $363 welfare grant she was getting for them is 29 percent of her monthly income. Besides SSI and welfare, she gets $166 per month from their father?s Social Security and $27 from a state program for the blind.
A single mother, she lives in subsidized housing, paying $314 per month rent for a three-bedroom apartment. She supplements her grocery bill with $193 each month in food stamps.
?I?m stressing about it,? said Fairbanks, who is too disabled to work.
Democratic Gov. John Lynch counted on saving about $8 million in the $2.5 billion, two-year state tax-funded part of the budget enacted last June. The law change needed to implement the cut was delayed until this year due to an oversight. Fairbanks and the other families will feel the first effect of the cuts in March.
The state made difficult decisions given its limited resources, Lynch spokesman Colin Manning said.
?The state decided to include social security as income when determining eligibility because it is income and it would allow the state to stretch dollars to help more of our people,? he said.
State Rep. Neal Kurk, a Weare Republican whose subcommittee handled that section in the House budget, agreed:
?We have scarce taxpayer resources and therefore we should devote them to those with the greatest financial need and to determine financial need we should consider all their income, not just some of it.?
Bob Mack, president of the New Hampshire Local Welfare Association, which represents local welfare offices, said the cut could result in pressure being put on communities and their property taxpayers to make up for the lost income through local welfare.
Judy Silva, government affairs director for the New Hampshire Municipal Association, said state law requires communities to ensure citizens? basic needs are met, which can mean filling the gaps left by state and federal welfare programs.
?The cities and towns can?t turn them away if they meet the financial guidelines,? said Silva.
If people have enough money to cover their rent, but not for food and their electric bill, local welfare pays for it for as long as they need it, said Silva.
Jeff Butler, a 57-year-old disabled Hillsboro resident, is trying to figure out how his family will make up for the loss of $626 each month ? 27 percent of the family?s monthly income. He and his wife and three of their five children have disabilities that include depression, physical and learning disabilities. Butler said SSI income is designed to help the individual who can?t work, not be spread over several others in a family. The disabled can?t cope with income cuts like people without disabilities, he said.
?You can?t pick up extra jobs to pay for it,? he said.
Butler said he doesn?t know what his family will cut.
?That?s the thing about a really low-income budget, you learn to survive, to do whatever you have to do,? he said. ?Sometimes it means going to the food pantry more often.?

Skate Amherstburg held a ?test day? Friday night at the UCCU Complex where 54 tests were conducted throughout the evening. Test chair Marlene Ryan explained that there were four disciplines the skaters were judged once their coaches put their names forth once the skaters were ready for testing.
The four disciplines the skaters were judged in include free skate, dance, interpretive and skills. Ryan said licensed judged from Skate Canada come in and judge each respective skater.
?It?s all run by volunteers,? said Ryan.
Skaters ranged from junior to senior level.
Skate Amherstburg has a 95 per cent pass rate, Ryan pointed out.
?It speaks to the quality of coaching the students are getting,? added Ryan.

The false claim was already ?liked? by several until my cousin of course, who went to great lengths to insist that the poster get the facts straight. Upon hearing of this, I visited this ?friend?s? wall and like my cousin, warned that such ignorant and mischievous information was wrong and only continued to lead to an alienation of the Republican Party from immigrant voters.
The next day, both my cousin and I were ?defriended? by this right winger, who then proceeded to verbally abuse us on his Facebook wall and insisted he was happy to ?take out the liberal trash.?
The move from this individual was surprising and somewhat disturbing but it definitely represents a trend that has been eerily a part of the right?s campaign to scapegoat immigrants ?both legal and illegal.
The 9/11 claim has been one bandied around for a while now by the right. In fact, current GOP Presidential hopeful, Newt Gingrich, in an ?08 bid for the White House against then hopeful, John McCain, released an ad on his website and to YouTube mistakenly suggesting 9/11 hijacker Mohamed Atta did not have legal status in the U.S. Photos of Mohammed Atta and other 9/11 hijackers appeared in the ad and the word ?Illegally? was printed in bold, red letters ? flashed over the screen.
Citizens United, a conservative group lobbying against the immigration bill, paid for the ad at the time purchased a ?six-figure? media buy for the ad to appear on cable television.
The truth is that all of the 19 men who hijacked planes on September 11th, including Atta, entered the United States on a tourist, or student visa, issued by the former U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service.
Now with another election up for grabs, the false claim has resurfaced and is making its Internet rounds as the scapegoating of immigrants resumes.
When is this going to stop? Would it be the same if more of the so called ?illegal aliens? were not brown or black?
The lies continue to be perpetrated by organizations with the ironic name of FAIR! There?s nothing fair about the deceitful claims put out by FAIR and then promoted by right wingers. For instance, after President Obama?s State of the Union last month, the group put out a press release that screamed: ?President Asks Congress for Amnesty Plan but Fails to Mention He?s Already Launched it without Their Approval.? Which speech exactly did these folks watch?
And this past week, on CNN, FAIR ran an ad attacking not just illegal but now legal immigrants, claiming they are taking away jobs from Americans who can?t get jobs.
The reality is that each ?legal? immigrant coming to America on an employment visa has to prove they are not taking away a job from an American. The work being done by many ?illegals? across this country, picking fruit and vegetables for $3 per box, washing dishes in restaurant or cleaning homes, lawns and supermarkets and fish, is work even those unemployed Americans will refuse.
But let?s give it a test FAIR! Let?s get the unemployed to apply for the jobs in the American farms desperate for labor and see how that will turn out.
The reality is that border crossings are down, more ?illegals? have been deported under the Obama administration than any other President, Republican or Democrat; many U.S. businesses are hurting as they urgently need skilled and unskilled migrant labor; many immigrants are heading up major companies or starting businesses and the undocumented are paying taxes and making a significant contribution to this country. Those are the facts so let?s not be consumed by lies and ignorance. No one wants an open border policy or general amnesty. Those are lies from the right that offer no real solutions and continue to perpetuate the ignorance. The reality is we need immigration reform that can benefit our country and economy and one that is humane and offers solutions not a head in the ground, racist pronouncement.

Greek party leaders prepare for crucial debt talks (AP)
ATHENS, Greece ? Greek coalition leaders are preparing their responses to a draft deal on harsh cutbacks creditors are demanding to approve a euro130 billion ($170 billion) bailout that will help the country avoid a looming bankruptcy next month.
Their decisions will be announced at a meeting with Prime Minister Lucas Papademos, originally scheduled for 1100 GMT, but delayed until at least 1400 GMT. That will give the three coalition parties more time to study the 50-page English-language document, drawn up with the country's debt inspectors late Tuesday.
The coalition talks have been postponed over the last three days to make time for exhaustive negotiations with representatives of the European Union, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund, on whose approval the continued flow of Greece's vital rescue loans depends.
Without the bailout, Greece would not have enough money to pay off a big bond redemption payment next month, triggering a default that risks sending shockwaves throughout financial markets and the global economy.
"We face crucial decisions ... that will determine the country's course in coming years," Deputy Finance Minister Philippos Sachinidis told Parliament. "These days are among the most crucial of our post-World War II history."
The three organizations, known collectively as the "troika", have demanded further measures to improve Greece's competitiveness and economic stability ? including new private sector wage and pension cuts, public sector layoffs and cuts in health, pension and defense spending ? before they sign off on the new euro130 billion ($170 billion) bailout.
The troika's proposals have horrified unions, who held a general strike Tuesday. Greeks have already been hit with a spate of salary cuts and drastically increased taxation over the past two years, amid record-high unemployment and a five-year recession.
Labor Minister Giorgos Koutroumanis told Parliament last week that a demanded reduction in the euro751 ($985) monthly minimum wage would quicken the Greek economy's contraction and hit the revenues of struggling pension funds that have already lost euro20 billion ($26 billion) since 2009.
But Athens has minimal ground for maneuver. Without the rescue loans, the country will default on its massive debts in March, when it faces a euro14.5 billion ($19 billion) bond redemption.
Stocks advanced Wednesday, while the euro was trading near two-month highs, as global markets were hopeful a deal would be struck in Athens. Greek shares were 0.9 percent up in afternoon trading.
"We are finally approaching the endgame of the Greek talks," said Gary Jenkins, managing director at Swordfish Research. "Ultimately it is difficult to see how they can do anything other than agree a deal. After all, the alternative is a disorderly default which could lead to a much deeper economic depression and potential civil unrest."
Late Tuesday, Greece's private creditors signaled progress on a separate, linked agreement that would cut the country's privately held debt load by 50 percent, or some euro100 billion ($131 billion). The intention behind the writedown is to ensure that Greece's long-term debts are sustainable. Banks, pension and hedge funds and other private sector holders of Greek debt are expected to swap their current bonds for new ones worth 50 percent less than the original face value, with longer repayment terms and a lower interest rate. They are also expected to get a euro30 billion payment as part of the bond swap deal.
Representatives of the Institute of International Finance, which has been leading the talks for private bondholders, had a "constructive meeting" with Papademos, IIF spokesman Frank Vogl said.
Papademos and Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos will soon brief the rest of the 17-nation eurozone on the proposed deal, Vogl said ? a sign the bond-swap deal could be close.
The meeting of eurozone finance ministers could happen as soon as Thursday in Brussels, according to officials, although that will depend on an agreement in Athens on the terms of the second bailout.
If political leaders accept the demanded austerity, Greek officials say a cabinet meeting will approve the deal, likely later Wednesday. Parliament will then have to vote on the deal over the weekend.
Ratification should prove simple provided all three coalition partners back the deal, as they control a combined 252 of Parliament's 300 seats ? enough to carry the vote even if there is a limited backbencher rebellion.
Greece has been kept solvent since May 2010 by payments from a euro110 billion ($145 billion) international rescue loan package. When it became clear the money would not be enough, a second bailout was decided last October.
The Greek government has already accepted that it must cut 15,000 state jobs in 2012 to get the new bailout, and reduce 2012 spending by a further euro3.3 billion ($4.3 billion) as well as wage costs in the private sector and recapitalize banks without nationalizing them.
But disagreement remains on the extent of those cuts between party officials, who are set to face national elections in late April ? after the debt deals have been sealed and implemented.
The majority Socialists, main rival conservatives and the small right-wing LAOS party are also at odds over when the elections should be held.
The Socialists, who handed over power to Papademos in November and are trailing badly in opinion polls, want him to stay through parliament's four-year term that ends in late 2013. But conservatives, buoyed by their lead in opinion polls, are demanding an April vote according to plan.
LAOS leader George Karatazferis criticized eurozone heavyweights France and Germany on Tuesday, saying they were carrying out an "aggressive humiliation of Greece" with their demands for new austerity measures.
A disorderly bankruptcy by Greece would likely lead to its exit from the eurozone, a situation that European officials have insisted is impossible because it would hurt other weak countries like Portugal, Ireland and Italy.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel also argued strongly against the prospect.
"The euro is not just an economic project, it is also a political project ? and I am not going to participate in pushing Greece out of the euro," she said late Tuesday. "It would have incalculable consequences."
