Orangutans smarter than previously thought: Orangutan nest building highly sophisticated

ScienceDaily (Apr. 17, 2012) ? Orangutans may be smarter than previously thought if a new study into the sophisticated way they build nests is any indication.

Scientists at The University of Manchester spent a year observing and filming orangutans at a research facility in Indonesia and found they apparently possess complex knowledge of mechanical design and material properties.

The great apes -- which only live wild in Sumatra and Borneo and are one of man's closest relatives -- build large, oval nests in tree canopies every day where they sleep overnight, possibly for protection from predators and parasites or for warmth during sleep.

Until now, little was known about the nests' mechanical design and material properties but the researchers, led by Dr Roland Ennos, and carried out by PhD student Adam van Casteren, reported that the orangutans used particular branches for different parts of the nest. They also broke the branches in different ways depending on how they would be used.

"We found that the orangutans chose strong, rigid tree branches for the structural parts of the nests that supported their weight, and weaker, more flexible branches for the nest's linings, suggesting that the apes' choice of branch for different parts of the nests was dictated by the branches' diameter and rigidity," said Dr Ennos, based in the University of Manchester's Faculty of Life Sciences.

"Further, branches chosen for the nests' structural framework were fractured differently from those chosen for the lining: whereas structural branches were broken halfway across, leaving them attached, branches used for lining were completely severed, suggesting that orangutans might use knowledge of the different ways in which branches break to build strong and comfortable nests."

The authors, writing in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggest orangutans, like some birds, might possess engineering expertise.

Dr Ennos added: "We witnessed orangutans building safe comfortable nests by half-breaking and weaving thick branches and twisting smaller branches right off to make a sort mattress. They seem to have learnt about the mechanical properties of wood, and use this knowledge in a clever way.

"Our research has implications for the evolution of intelligence and cognition as well as the evolution of tool use in early humans. It provides evidence that the development of all these traits started in apes because of their need to understand their mechanical environment, not just their social environment."

Rome cracks down on marauding centurions

The city has given a deadline of April 6 for the tourist terrors to clear away from the Colosseum area.

By Adam L. Freeman,?Contributor / April 2, 2012

Rome has given the centurions a deadline to clear out. The solders in question aren't from the ranks of an ancient legion, but are modern-day performers who pose for tourist?photos at the Colosseum.

Men and women decked out in chest plates and helmets eke out a?tax-free living at Rome?s most popular attraction, posing for photos with foreign?visitors for 5 or 10 euros. Disoriented, jet lagged, or simply scared,?tourists have been known to pay up to 50 euros ($67). Some have been roughed?up when they refuse.

Arrests were made last summer in an undercover operation with police?in tunics and sandals handcuffing centurions and gladiators for?ripping off tourists. A recent Italian media report cited a policeman?as saying the centurions are all ex-convicts, ?every last one of?them.?

Now the city government says ?basta!? and wants them to pack up their?swords, shields, and ensigns and clear out by April 6.

?This will end badly. We?ll wage a revolution. We?ll burn down the?Coliseum rather than move from here,? a 21st-century centurion?recently told the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

Along with the fake ancient Roman soldiers, the city aims to rid?itself of the vast illegal industry of food and souvenir vendors that?feeds off the 6 million people who every year visit the site where?Russell Crowe avenged his family?s murder in the 2000 sword-and-sandal blockbuster "Gladiator."

City and national officials say they are defending?Rome-the-living-museum from an image akin to theme parks where?visitors feast on fast food and ham it up for the camera with?fairytale characters.

But the Italian economy is in recession and its prisons overcrowded so government bureaucrats should be vigilant for unrest?in the legionary ranks. They might want to reconsider a plan that puts?ex-cons out of work.

Lady Gaga Makes Light Of Eating Disorders With ...

? GAGAREXIA

Some of Lady Gaga?s 22 million followers are angry with her for making light of eating disorders after she tweeted about eating healthy instead of pigging out with the hashtag #PopSingersDontEat.

Mother Monster has talked about having bulimia in high school before, so perhaps she thinks she has the cred to joke about anorexia.

After all, Twitter hashtags often give the writer the ability to be ?as offensive as they want? without really meaning it.

But a lot of young girls (and gay men and LGBTs) suffer from eating disorders, the same young girls who go on the internet to thinspiration blogs and will doubtless use her #PopSingersDontEat as a new call to action on how to be as impossibly skinny and pretty as Lady Gaga.

And guess what: eating disorders have the highest death rate of any mental disorder.

Since she took that ?vow of silence,? we guess she won?t be defending herself to the media anytime soon.

Dr. Lester Breslow dies at 97; UCLA dean was 'Mr. Public Health'

Dr. Lester Breslow, the UCLA researcher who became known as "Mr. Public Health" because of his research emphasizing the beneficial effects of avoiding certain behaviors, such as smoking, overeating and failing to exercise regularly, has died. He was 97.

Breslow, a former director of the California Department of Public Health and dean of UCLA's Fielding School of Public Health, died Monday at his home in Los Angeles, the university announced.

Breslow played a key role in medicine's transition from an emphasis on simply treating disease to a much broader effort to prevent it. Medicine focused "almost exclusively on communicable diseases when I started" in the 1940s, he recently recalled. "I felt public health needed a broader vision."

He really was "a legend" because his influence "has persisted for such a long time ? seven decades," said Dr. Linda Rosenstock, the current dean of the school. "In terms of understanding the ability to prevent chronic disease through exercise, diet and [not] smoking, he is the single human being that is given the most credit."

Most physicians today would recognize that it is just as important to prevent disease, particularly diabetes, heart conditions and other chronic illnesses, as it is to treat them. But when Breslow began his work, his concerns were met with skepticism and outright disdain.

In his initial interview to join the California public health department, he was told, he said, "to take his crazy ideas back to Minnesota and try them there."

Only the intervention of a friend brought him into the agency. And it was there that he carried out what he and others consider his greatest accomplishment, the Alameda County Human Population Laboratory.

Beginning in 1959, Breslow and his colleagues enrolled about 7,000 residents of the county in a study to determine whether and how well they adhered to what he identified as seven habits of healthy living. Six of the habits had been identified by previous research: exercising regularly; getting regular sleep; not smoking; drinking moderately or not at all; eating regular meals and not snacking in between; and maintaining a normal weight.

The seventh, eating a regular breakfast, was simply an educated guess, he admitted later.

The results were dramatic. The team reported in the early 1970s that a 45-year-old who adhered to at least six of the seven habits had a life expectancy 11 years longer than that of peers who followed fewer than four. A 60-year-old who followed all seven of the habits was as healthy as a 30-year-old who followed two or less.

"I'd never seen such a systematic, positive, strong finding," Breslow said. "The results were so astonishing that I didn't believe it" at first. "I thought my colleagues were playing a joke on me."

Even among those who did not die, the effects of neglecting good health could be devastating. In a 1993 study co-authored with his son Norman, a statistician at the University of Washington, he reported that those who had six or seven of the poor health habits in 1965 were twice as likely as their neighbors with no more than two of the bad habits to be disabled 10 years later.

Among participants with one or no poor habits, the researchers found 12.2% were disabled 10 years later. Among those with two or three poor health habits, 14.1% were disabled, while 18.7% of those with four or more were disabled.

As a youth in North Dakota, Breslow had tried smoking corn silk in corncob pipes and had even experimented with cigarettes, but found that they irritated his throat. He later concluded that smoking was a major health risk and initiated several studies while he was head of the public health department. Three of those studies linking smoking to lung cancer and other diseases were cited in the U.S. surgeon general's landmark 1964 report on smoking.

Lester Breslow was born March 17, 1915, in Bismarck, N.D., the son of a pharmacist. He developed a severe stammer, but a friendly nurse encouraged him to read aloud and conduct other exercises to improve his speech. By high school, he was able to join the debate team and develop a speaking ability that served him well most of his life.

He received a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1935 and his medical degree in 1938. But his experiences in a mental hospital in Rochester, Minn., soured him on the profession and he turned his interests to public health, receiving a master's in 1941.

In 1943, he volunteered for the U.S. Army Medical Corps and received training in tropical diseases. Posted in San Francisco, he was responsible for ensuring that no communicable diseases were brought into the city by returning military personnel. He later transferred to the Army's 7th Infantry Division in the Philippines, where he identified an epidemic of the parasitic disease schistosomiasis, and then to Okinawa.

In 1946, he joined the California public health department, becoming chief of the bureau of chronic diseases and, ultimately, head of the department.

He was active in the creation of the state's Medi-Cal program, promoted screening for the genetic disorder phenylketonuria among newborns and campaigned against smog, measles and unnecessary noise.

Breslow also started the state's Tumor Registry, which has been instrumental in hundreds of studies of environmental and behavioral effects on cancer.

In 1968, he left state service to join UCLA, where he remained for the rest of his career. He served as dean of the School of Public Health from 1972 to 1980.

In 1952, he served as director of President Truman's Commission on Health Needs of the Nation and subsequently served on a variety of other commissions and advisory boards. A past president of the American Public Health Assn., he also established and was the first editor of the Encyclopedia of Public Health.

Breslow followed his own prescriptions, walking regularly and practicing moderation in all his activities. He cleared rocks from the hillside above his Bel-Air home to create a fruit and vegetable garden that he tended regularly, keeping precise records of all that he harvested.

He married the former Alice Philp in 1939 and they had three sons before divorcing. In 1967, he married Devra Miller.

He is survived by his wife; sons Norman, Jack and Stephen; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Maugh is a former medical writer for The Times.

Civil Society statement on the political transition in Malawi | Malawi ...

By Civil Society Organisations

April 11, 2012 ????? 15 Comments

Email This Post?Email This Post

Introduction

We, members of the civil society organizations in Malawi, are saddened with the untimely death of the late Prof. Ngwazi Bingu wa Mutharika who until his death was the father and President of the Malawi Nation. On behalf of the civil society organizations we would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Madam Calista? Mutharika, the Mutharika?s family and the entire Malawi nation for the loss of the our beloved Malawi leader. Therefore, we call upon all Malawians to remain united at this trying moment as we mourn the former Head of State.

In the same vein, we wish to congratulate all Malawians for the peaceful political transition. In particular, we commend Malawians for accepting to abide by the Constitution in ushering Her Excellency Madam Joyce Mtila Banda then Vice President to the office of the President of the Republic of Malawi. We congratulate the President elect for taking up the mantle of leadership and we wish her all the success in her new position.

However, knowing that Malawi is going through numerous challenges, it is imperative that we cautiously raise key issues to the current administration to consider as matters of priority.

Guard of honour: President Joyce Banda

?Key Issues

?1.?????? Management of Bilateral and Multi-lateral Relations

We note that the current administration has a huge task ahead to mend fences with the bilateral and multi-lateral cooperating institutions and agencies. This is against the background that the previous administration undermined the role of such institutions and agencies in supporting Malawi?s development agenda. Therefore, we call upon Her Excellency Madam Joyce Mtila Banda to engage in a constructive discussion with these agencies in order to unlock funding that was withheld for the country. We reiterate that donor support is key to Malawi?s development and that mutual diplomatic relations is critical in sustaining not only donor confidence but also in leveraging support for our development agenda.

?2.?????? Dealing with Structural Re-arrangements

We are aware that the new administration comes up with its own strategic public service appointments. This being the case, we impress upon Her Excellency in ensuring that these appointments are made on merit as opposed to political appeasement. As civil society, we take note that the previous administration was largely based on nepotistic appointments which to a greater extent contributed to the collapse of government and other state institutions. In addition, we feel that an inclusive government would be ideal not only in promoting national unity but also in winning public trust and confidence.

?3.?????? Matters of State Accountability

We appreciate the good will demonstrated by Her Excellency in her acceptance speech that she will not take a revenge on members of the previous administration as part of the national reconciliation and building. However, we would like to indicate that matters of accountability and justice do not equal vengeance in which case, it is the expectation of Malawians that the current administration must investigate and/or prosecute any malpractices or abuse of public offices by the previous administration. We underscore the fact that revenge does not imply exemption from due legal process of accountability.

4.?????? Follow up on the July 20 Petition

We would like to remind the current administration that some issues raised in the July 20 petitions still stand. Of particular concern, are issues to do with acute shortage of forex and fuel, drug shortage, high cost of living, strained donor relations, housing scam, creation of decent jobs and repressive laws among others. While acknowledging that the dialogue process concluded on these matters, there is need for robust implementation of the recommendations. This, in part, calls for effective implementation and monitoring strategy and structures which unfortunately were not yet put in place. We therefore call upon the current administration to ensure that the demands of the citizenry are carefully considered. More so, there is need for constant information and feedback on progress made in order to keep up the trust and confidence of a government that cares for its people.

?5.?????? Dealing with influx of Members from Other Parties

We are concerned with the rate at which members from various parties in particular the Democratic People?s Party are announcing their allegiance to the People?s Party as a clear indicator of power shift. We are thus wondering whether the massive defections are based on principles or other motives. We are of the view that these defections should be carefully managed in order to strengthen the ruling party and its administration. History manifests that the same arrangement weakened the United Democratic Front and so is the Democratic Progressive Party. In view of this, we suggest that there must be careful reflection on members joining the party in the name of ?having consulted the constituents? when in fact they are serving personal interests.

?6.?????? Call for Professionalism

We bemoan the recent conduct of the Malawi Police Services in violating human rights and undermining the rule of law. The Malawi Police Service is established as a state institution charged with the responsibility to ensure that there is law and order, protection of people?s lives and property include being an instrument to uphold the human dignity of every Malawian. Of late, we have observed that the Malawi Police Service has discharged its function in unprofessional conduct by way of violating the rights of the citizens. As such, we welcome the appointment of the new Inspector General of Police, Mr. Loti Dzonzi who we are aware is a long serving accomplished professional. We however, appeal to the new IG to expeditiously correct the image of the Malawi Police Service and serve the people of Malawi as per the mandate of the institution in line with the current political and democratic dispensation. Notwithstanding the preceding, the current administration is also urged to appoint the Deputy IG, and institute the Independent Police Commission as part of strategic reform.

?7.?????? Re-constitution of Commissioners at MEC and MHRC

We note that the term of office for the Commissioners at Malawi Electoral Commission expired two months ago while that of the Malawi Human Rights Commission is expiring in May this year. Usually it has taken too long to re-appoint new commissioners which has in turn affected the smooth running of operations. Considering that we have tripartite elections in 2014, we call upon Her Excellency, Madam Joyce Mtila Banda to expedite the appointment of the said commissioners to ensure that the preparations for the elections do not pose a major challenge because of inadequate preparations. In addition, we impress upon the new administration to ensure that there is thorough consultations with other political parties as required by the law. Similarly, the Human Rights Commission is one such an institution that is important in promoting, protecting and upholding human rights. We therefore call upon the current administration to ensure that the appointments are done without due delay.

?8.?????? Dissolution of NGO and NICE Boards

We are aware that the previous administration constituted the NGO and NICE Boards with disregard of law and donor interests respectively. This demonstrates failure by the previous administration in respecting legal requirements and donor contractual obligations. As a result, the previous administration has put funding for NICE on hold long enough than it could have been resolved. Consequently, it has led to denial of access to information by the general public. In view of this, we call upon Her Excellency to immediately dissolve and re-constitute the respective boards particularly in consideration of the anomalies the previous administration had overlooked.

?9.?????? Management of Commissions of Inquiries

There have been a number of commissions of inquiries before whose results have not been brought to the public domain. The fact that they were instituted by the previous administration does not negate their essence.? For instance, among others, the Malawi nation is still waiting for the findings of the commission of inquiry on Robert Chasowa whose mysterious death right at the Polytechnic College campus left Malawians wondering whether the citizenry are guaranteed of their security. Similarly, the findings of the killings and assault of innocent Malawians during the July 20 demonstrations at the hands of the police are also long overdue. We would therefore like to appeal to the current administration to ensure that the Commissions finalize their work and that the public is made aware of the findings of these inquiries. The rationale for finalizing these processes is not only to ensure that justice is done but is also meant to help the country to prevent future occurrences.

?10.?? Repositioning the Role of Chiefs in Malawi?s Politics

We are saddened that the role of the chiefs was misconceived by the previous administration. We all witnessed how the chiefs played partisan politics which was uncalled for. In some cases, chiefs were used to propagate policies that only served interests of politicians thereby rendering their role questionable. While chiefs would support government of the day, the jurisdiction of their line of duty should clearly border around serving the interests of their subjects without discrimination or favour. Against this background, we appeal to this administration to responsibly work with the chiefs purely on development agenda. It would also be timely if the Chiefs Act was reviewed and passed to arrest the existing gaps in the law in order to effectively regulate them.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we recommend that the current administration should cultivate the spirit of ensuring that they win the trust and confidence of the people of Malawi. In the same vein, we urge the new administration to be accommodative and tolerant to the wishes of Malawians as cardinal principles of democracy. We also impress upon this administration to institute fiscal discipline to protect meager resources that Malawi is able to generate against myriad needs of the citizenry. Therefore, we expect the new administration to redouble its energy in dealing with corruption.
