Canada's Valeant on hunt for more deals, posts loss

(Reuters) - Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc is in talks to make more acquisitions, its chief executive said on Thursday, adding that Canada's largest publicly traded drugmaker also remains open to discuss a potential "merger of equals."

Valeant has made about a dozen deals for smaller companies or assets over the past year, including the $2.6 billion purchase of U.S.-based Medicis Pharmaceuticals Corp in December.

Valeant's shares and revenue have soared, although it posted a quarterly loss on Thursday due to costs related to the Medicis acquisition.

"We continue to be in active conversations for both large and small deals, but the timing of deals is unpredictable," CEO Michael Pearson said on a conference call with analysts to discuss the fiscal fourth-quarter results.

Pearson repeated a comment he made in early January that Valeant is open to a "merger of equals."

"I don't think it's too big a surprise that they're looking at acquisitions, but the magnitude that they're signaling is a little bit of a surprise," said Morningstar analyst David Krempa. "By bringing (a merger of equals) up again makes it seem much more likely."

Valeant stock dropped 29 Canadian cents to C$67.96 in morning trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Shares of the company, which has a market capitalization of C$20.28 billion ($19.7 billion) are up about 15 percent for the year so far.

Krempa said a huge deal might raise some concern, but he noted the company has a strong track record in acquisitions that add to earnings.

Valeant's net quarterly loss was $89.1 million, or 29 cents a share, compared with a profit of $55.6 million, or 18 cents, a year earlier.

Cash earnings, or profit adjusted for one-time items, reached $1.22 a share. Analysts on average expected earnings of $1.20, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Valeant's acquisitions have pushed its debt up 65 percent to $10.8 billion, from the end of 2011. The company aims to lower its debt level to below four times trailing EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) this year from slightly over four times currently, but said it had no hard targets for paying down its debt.

"It's a multi-dimensional puzzle," said Chief Financial Officer Howard Schiller. "We want to make sure our debt levels are such that we maintain access long-term at competitive (interest) rates. The other side of the equation is the business development opportunities we continue to see around the world, which continue to be quite attractive."

Revenue for the fourth quarter rose 43 percent to $986.3 million, stronger than analysts' average forecast of $949 million, while product sales increased 45 percent to $946.7 million.

Interest expenses jumped to $160.2 million from $94.1 million. Excluding interest expenses related to the Medicis acquisition, Valeant reported cash earnings of $1.34 per share.

Valeant's acquisition of Medicis brought Botox competitor Dysport and other skin-care drugs to its portfolio. The deal looks to be more valuable to Valeant than it earlier expected, Pearson said, both in terms of higher sales and lower costs.

The acquisitive company, formerly known as Biovail before it acquired Valeant and assumed its name, has focused on bulking up its skin-care lines, where patients often pay out of pocket. At the same time, it cut its exposure to cost-sensitive insurance programs.

In January, Pearson said the company could double or quadruple revenue "in the foreseeable future."

Why Business Management Degrees Are Great For Versatility

00075422Even as the economy shows signs of recovery, the job market remains fiercely competitive across practically all industries, particularly for entry-level positions. Factor in the rapid-fire rate of technological evolution and its impact on the global marketplace, and it?s clear that today?s college students are wise to invest in versatile degrees that will allow them to innovate and adapt at a pace with modern business. A degree in business management is arguably the most versatile of them all.

Business management, a broad field of study that covers everything from marketing and information systems to leadership and human resources, owes much of its value to that same breadth. Business students acquire knowledge and essential competencies in all foundational areas of modern business, across all industries and their subsectors. The principles of accounting apply no differently to the books of a small, family-run restaurant than those of a large, multinational corporation; information systems function precisely the same way whether they?re located in the basement of a fledgling nonprofit or the front office of a real estate tycoon.

Likewise, the leadership skills that students gain from coursework in business management transcend any specific field or workplace. Most business management degree programs emphasize communication skills, team-building ability, conflict de-escalation and critical thinking skills?all pillars of effective leadership?and prepare students to rise through the ranks of whichever employment sector they choose. Rather than confine themselves to a certain profession or industry, business management students render themselves attractive to employers of all kinds.

Some of the most common professional titles open to business management degree holders exist across industries. Supervisors, shift managers, assistant managers, project managers, directors of operations, directors of finance and so forth are ubiquitous from healthcare to home construction. These skilled professionals manage one or more of the three bedrock components of every successful business: processes, profits and people.

The topics typically covered in a business degree program?business law, operations, production, accounting, sales, marketing, finance, human resources, leadership and information systems?prepare students to manage the ?three P?s? of business, while specializations within the major, such as nonprofit management, entrepreneurship, international business, communications or finance can be a significant advantage when seeking employment or advancement.

As they consider degree programs, prospective students should take into account their lifestyles and learning styles. Many top universities now offer online or hybrid degree programs, in addition to traditional campus-bound study. Other factors to consider are the business school?s overall reputation and the program?s academic rigor. Individual preferences, whether for a certain industry (media, education), activity (recruiting, project management) or field of study (accounting, communications) should also be considered, as many business schools specialize in certain areas.

Students with no particular industry or subject area preference, however, should not despair. A good business management degree program will not only expose them to many potential specialties, but also offer universally applicable concentrations, such as human resources and project management. Versatility, after all, is a business management degree?s defining feature.

Samsung hands out paper invitations to Galaxy S IV launch at MWC

Didn't receive an emailed invitation to the Galaxy S IV event in Manhattan? You're not alone. It looks like Samsung is shaking things up a bit this time around, handing out paper invitations to the NYC shindig at its decked-out booth at Mobile World Congress. The note confirms the earlier news: March 14th is the big day, and unlike last year's kickoff, which was held in London to coincide with Olympics coverage, 2013's flagship will make its debut at 7PM ET at Radio City Music Hall in NYC. And we've got the golden ticket. We'll be liveblogging the event, of course, so mark the date!

How to I Prepare for Webinars and Teleseminars - Jason Alba

I do a lot of webinars, teleseminars and video recordings. ?Here are some tips on how I prepare.

  • Go potty. ?You don?t want to be on a 1 hour call and have your bladder screaming at you. ?Maybe you *can* hold it, but do you want to concentrate, answer questions, and sound awesome while having that distraction?
  • Have water. ?I have a big cup of water, full. ?I?ve done a few calls and didn?t get my cup filled? never a good idea. ?A coughing fit doesn?t sound very well?
  • Have the right headset. ?I use GoToWebinar and Skype mostly (I use all kinds of systems but those are my favorites), and 99+% of the time I use VOIP, which means a headset, not a phone line. ?The most important part of my headset? ?The inline mute button, which allows me to to mute by pushing a button that is about 2 feet down the cord. ?And, the ?right? headset doesn?t mean expensive. ?My favorites are about $30.
  • Write down the phone number on a piece of paper. If your internet goes down, and your smart phone loses service, you want to be able to pick up a landline and call in? but you need that number! ?I write down the number, the code to get in, and even the number of the host/hostess.
  • Have a backup computer/laptop? ?I have been doing this for over a year. ?Look, my webinars are worth a lot of money to me. ?Whether it is thousands of dollars, or potential to make sales or share my brand, if someone schedules their time on my call, I want to make sure my main computer isn?t the cause of an early termination. I have a laptop and headset set up so that if my PC crashes, within 5 seconds I?m up on the backup laptop. ?The alternative (which has happened too many times) is my PC restarts and it takes seven to ten minutes to get back to the call. ?Those seven minutes are KILLER.
  • Write down the talking points. ?I speak on different things, and most presentations are different from the others (even if it is the same topic). ?I always write down the talking points to make sure I talk about every point the audience thinks I?m going to talk about. ?No matter how smart you are, your brain will go in a lot of different directions, especially if the audience can ask questions during the call. ?Write down your points and respect your audience by talking about the stuff you said you were going to talk about.
  • Respect TIME. ?I typically start within 60 seconds of the time I said I would, and I do what I can to end on time. ?Don?t go longer, don?t do part and tell people you?ll do another part later. ?Respect the audience and watch the clock.
  • Be ready for the unexpected. ?If someone else is co-presenting and their line dies, what do you do? ?Can you talk through it? ?What if you get the hiccups? ?What about a bloody nose? ?What if there is unusual and loud noise by your office? ?I?ve had these and more? you need to be ready and able to ignore, or talk through, the unexpected. ?FOCUS on your audience and your presentation.
  • ???

What would you add to this list? ?How do you prepare, or what have you seen other presenters do that is awesome?

Prime suspect sought in Vegas shooting, crash

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Police are seeking a 26-year-old man as the prime suspect in last week's pre-dawn shooting and crash on the Las Vegas Strip that killed three people and injured several others

The black SUV used as a getaway car was found Saturday as police named Ammar Harris in connection with the shooting and six-vehicle chain-reaction carnage Thursday on the neon-lit boulevard near the Bellagio, Caesars Palace, Bally's and Flamingo resorts,

An aspiring rapper who was driving a Maserati was shot to death, while two people in a taxi died in the crash.

"His location is unknown," police Capt. Chris Jones said of Harris, who sometimes goes by the name Ammar Asim Faruq Harris. Police say he has been arrested for working as a pimp.

Police released a photo that was taken when Harris was arrested last year on pandering, kidnapping, sexual assault and coercion charges. The disposition of that case was not immediately known.

The photo shows Harris with tattoos on his right cheek and words on his neck above an image that appeared to depict an owl with blackened eyes. Jones warned that Harris should be considered armed and dangerous.

Police had been searching for the black Range Rover, with blackout windows and distinctive black rims, since it was last seen speeding from the shooting. It was located at an apartment complex just a couple of blocks east of the neon-lit boulevard, and was impounded as evidence, Jones said.

The shooting killed Kenneth Wayne Cherry Jr., who was driving the dark gray Maserati that was peppered by gunfire from the SUV. Taxi driver Michael Boldon and passenger Sandra Sutton-Wasmund, of Maple Valley, Wash., died when the Maserati hit their taxi, which exploded in flames.

Boldon, 62, was a family man who moved from Michigan to Las Vegas. Sutton-Wasmund, 48, was a businesswoman and mother of three.

A passenger in the Maserati was wounded in the arm and four people from four other vehicles were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The Maserati passenger was cooperating with investigators. His name hasn't been made public.

The shocking chain of events had family members and friends in Las Vegas, California, Michigan and Washington trying to grasp the blink-of-an-eye finality of it all.

"My son was a good boy," Kenneth Cherry Sr. told reporters Saturday in a news conference convened by Las Vegas lawyers Vicki Greco and Robert Beckett.

Beckett said they wanted to respond to rumors that the 27-year-old son ? who produced a rap video using the name Kenny Clutch ? was a gangster and a troublemaker. The attorneys had represented his son, and now represent his estate and the family.

"My son was a victim just like the two people in that taxi," Kenneth Cherry Sr. said. "Trouble found him. The people in the taxicab, trouble found them."

Court records show Cherry had no criminal cases or convictions in Las Vegas, and police said there was no record of arrests.

The Clark County coroner determined that Kenny Cherry died of at least one gunshot to the chest. Boldon and Sutton-Wasmund died of injuries in the crash. All three deaths were ruled homicides.

Police say the shooting appeared to stem from an argument at the valet area of the upscale Aria resort-casino about a block south of the crash scene. The shooting happened after a night featuring Morocco-born rapper French Montana at Aria nightclub Haze.

Cherry's parents live in Emeryville, Calif., and the father said his son's body would be taken back to Oakland. He said his son started a music career there and was recognized by other rappers within a West Coast hip-hop strain called hyphy.

Cherry wasn't well-known in wider music circles, according to Chuck Creekmur, CEO of AllHipHop.com.

Kenny Clutch's YouTube music video, "Stay Schemin," shows scenes of hotels along the Strip as he sings about paying $120,000 for his Maserati.

"One mistake change lives all in one night," he raps in one verse.

Kenneth Cherry Sr., who said he runs a cellphone business, said he helped his son make payments on the Maserati. He said he last spoke to him on Wednesday, when they talked about the high cost of the son's cellphone use.

Cherry Sr. described his son as an entrepreneur but didn't say how he made money or if he had jobs other than his music production.

Boldon's family in Las Vegas was struggling to cope with his death, said Tehran Boldon, the taxi driver's younger brother.

Boldon's sister, Carolyn Jean Trimble, said Boldon was a father, a grandfather and a car race enthusiast who drove a Mercedes when he wasn't in a cab. He owned a clothing store in Detroit and worked at a car dealership, his sister said, and drove taxis after moving to Las Vegas about 1? years ago.

The irony that a man with a taste for beautiful cars was killed by a sports car wasn't lost on Trimble.

"He would be tickled to death: 'Damn, of all things, a Maserati hit me, took me out like that,'" she said. "I'm happy he didn't suffer."

In Washington, Sutton-Wasmund co-owned a dress shop, said Debbie Tvedt, the office manager for a Maple Valley plumbing company that Sutton-Wasmund started with her husband, James Wasmund. Sutton-Wasmund was in Las Vegas attending a trade show with her business partner.

"It's a big loss," Tvedt said in a telephone interview with AP.

The Maple Valley-Black Diamond Chamber of Commerce website said Sutton-Wasmund was a board member from 2004 to 2011 before becoming a marketing representative.

A phone message left for James Wasmund was not immediately returned.

The famously glowing, always-open Las Vegas Strip was closed for some 15 hours after the crash. Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Eric Kemmer recalled a similarly long closure after the 1996 drive-by slaying of rapper Tupac Shakur.

That shooting ? involving assailants opening fire on Shakur's luxury sedan from a vehicle on Flamingo Road ? happened about a block away from Thursday's crash.

The Shakur killing has never been solved.

Head to head: NVIDIA's Tegra 4 and Tegra 4i

NVIDIA Tegra 4

Chipmaker shows its 2013 wares at Mobile World Congress

For NVIDIA in 2013 (so far at least), the conversation revolves around Tegra 4 and Tegra 4i. The gist is that Tegra 4 is more powerful of the two, with more GPU cores than Tegra 4i (72 versus 60) and boasting the ARM 15 processor as part of NVIDIA's 4+1 quad-core package. It's a little bigger and more expensive than Tegra 4i, which dispenses with a dozen GPU cores and integrates the i500 LTE modem onto the die. Tegra 4i also uses an ARM9-r4, which while not quite as bad-ass as the ARM15 can very much still hold its own thanks to the optimization from ARM and NVIDIA.

Android Central at Mobile World Congress

We got an up-close look at the new systems today, on the eve of Mobile World Congress, in a series of relatively controlled scenarios on test hardare, including NVIDIA's own "Phoenix" reference phone. And it's tough not to let NVIDIA's enthusiasm for its new line rub off on you. On paper, anyway, and comparing to the best of what's currently available -- which means Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 and its own Tegra 3 -- the next generation of Tegra devices looks damned promising.

ZTE Open Firefox OS phone announced at MWC 2013, we go hands-on

Alcatel wasn't the only one to flash some Firefox OS hardware at Mozilla's big MWC event. ZTE was also showing off two shades of its new smartphone, the Open. The device will launch in orange and blue in global territories starting in Q2. It has a very handy 3.5-inch screen, meaning there's no issues holding it in one hand but there's not a lot of premium feel going on here. The plastic shell felt like any low-end Android device, though we won't fault the grippy finish here.

Other specs (that we've already snuck a peek at) include a Cortex-A5-based Qualcomm processor that could be clocked at either 600MHz or 800MHz -- we're trying to get a confirmation on that. There's also 256MB of RAM, 512MB of expandable storage and a humble 3.2-megapixel camera on the back. The 480 x 320 screen itself is nothing to shout home about. Again, it feels like a flashback to those sub-$150 smartphones that did the rounds back in 2011 and while it's not the flashiest spec sheet, ZTE (and Firefox) are pitching this at those millions of future smartphone users that haven't already plumped for a mobile OS. However, the search function looks pretty pervasive, able to tap into apps, the web and more in search of the answer you're looking for. Specific carriers will be able to add in their own apps (pre-installed or not) for its customers. We got a glimpse at a data monitoring app that could pull together your data habits and respective carrier plans -- even if there's no word on a US release beyond some time in 2014. There's a quick hands-on after the break.

Myriam Joire, Terrence O'Brien and Sharif Sakr contributed to this report.

Owning a property in Beverly Hills appear to be a token necessity among celebrities. One can just imagine the corresponding insurance required for these properties. These properties are certainly worth looking into:

Ellen De Generes and her wife Portia de Rossi listed their sprawling estate on Coldwater Canyon for sale at the price of $ 49 million. Ryan Seacrest got it for $ 37 million, certainly still a big amount of money. Apparently, this property consisting of four separate parcels of land accumulated over the years by spouses De Generes and Rossi seem to be worth it. The property practically covers an entire city block and houses a 9,200 square foot main house and a gym with a size that is comparable to that of a huge health club. Seacrest must be doing quite a bit of walking to cover the entirety of this property.

Regardless of how you feel about ASUS, we think we can all agree on this: the company knows how to put on a good show. The outfit's made it pretty obvious it's about to announce a new PadFone here at Mobile World Congress, thanks to teasers involving a Spanish-speaking statue and a spaceship landing atop La Sagrada Familia. Plus, chairman Jonney Shih has a little trouble controlling the volume of his voice, especially if you get him on the subject of ubiquitous cloud computing. The Simplest New Way To Shop For A Wedding Dress

There's a new way to shop for a wedding dress, and it doesn't even require leaving your house.

Bridal designer Kirstie Kelly recently launched a program called "Borrow Me," which allows brides to order gowns from the website, keep them for two days to try on, and either buy them or mail them back. It costs $35 to borrow each dress.

Another bridal company, The Dessy Group, also offers a similar program.

With the harsh lighting and too-small sample sizes that often come with shopping in a bridal boutique, the idea of trying on dresses at home is pretty intriguing. Plus, if you like the dress and you know it fits (or will fit with minor alterations) you can feel confident making the purchase online. So tell us: would you take advantage of this service?

Check out some Kirstie Kelly dresses in the slideshow below.

US-Japan leaders discuss trade, China, and North Korea

President Obama met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Friday. Major topics included Japan's joining a regional trade pact, North Korea's recent nuclear test, and a Japan-China territorial dispute.

Domestic issues like immigration, gun violence, and looming across-the-board spending cuts may top President Obama?s second-term agenda. But he hasn?t forgotten his vision of rebalancing US security and economic priorities towards Asia ? a priority he sought to re-emphasize by receiving Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the White House Friday for lunch and talks.

Following a morning meeting with Democratic governors, Mr. Obama greeted Mr. Abe for discussions focused on East Asia?s security challenges and expanding economic opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region ? what White House officials describe as the two principle focal points of the pivot to Asia Obama announced at the outset of his presidency.

On the security agenda, the two leaders discussed the international community?s response to North Korea?s third nuclear test last month, and the maritime disputes in the East China Sea and South China Sea that have led to increasingly tense relations between China and several of its neighbors ? including Japan.

Think you know Japan? Take our quiz to find out.

At a brief picture-taking session with reporters before lunch, Obama fielded several questions on prospects for avoiding ?sequestration,? or the automatic federal spending cuts set to take effect March 1. Abe answered a query about North Korea, saying, ?We just cannot tolerate the actions of North Korea, such as launching missiles and conducting nuclear tests,? Saying he and Obama ?agreed we would cooperate with one another and deal resolutely? with Pyongyang, Abe specifically cited the possibility of stiffer ?financial sanctions.?

On the regional economy, conversation focused on Japan?s interest in joining a trade pact called the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) currently being negotiated among the US and 10 other Asia-Pacific countries.

In a joint statement issued after the two leaders? talks, the two governments agreed that ?more work needs to be done? before Japan could be included in the 11-country negotiations. The statement says that in particular Japan would have to address ?concerns? over its tightly protected automotive and insurance sectors, although it also says Japan would not be required to ?make a prior commitment to unilaterally eliminate all tariffs? in order to join the talks ? something that had been a sticking point for Abe.?

The US says it would like to welcome Japan into the talks for the TPP ? which the US envisions as a template for 21st-century international trade and investment agreements ? but it says Japan would first have to open its auto and food markets to more imports.

Explaining the Absence of Sports Games at the PS4 Reveal Event

ps4logo

Despite features that will intrigue sports gamers there was no presence for the genre at the big PS4 press event. FIFA would have been by far the most likely candidate to appear but even it didn?t have a place there. In fact EA and Take Two weren?t in attendance to show any games. The absence of FIFA, as well as other big sellers sure to hit the launch window like Madden and NBA 2K, can be easily explained however.

EA Sports and 2K Sports have releases to promote prior to the arrival of the PS4 and next Xbox. Priority will lie on selling those first and then turning attention to the versions on the new consoles. Ideally they hope to sell as many consumers as possible on both?buying a 360/PS3 version in the period before they potentially will buy them on next-generation systems.

They do not want to unintentionally disparage the current generation of titles and have anyone thinking about passing on them with the plan instead of getting them later on the next Xbox or PS4. By far the bigger consumer base will remain on the current generation of systems for not just this year but well beyond.

The possibility of blowing anyone away with a presentation of a game like FIFA would have been minimal. Even the response to the new game reveals made there were lukewarm. The graphical jump from the current generation to the next is not near that of when the PS2/Xbox leapt to what we have now. There wasn?t anything EA or 2K could have done to create huge buzz this far in advance that also wouldn?t have hurt what they?ll be trying to sell in the months ahead.

Add to that doing so could have set themselves up for possible misery that wouldn?t have been worth the risk. EA Sports never was able to shake the disaster that was the Madden concept trailer ? which they laughably even claimed would be exceeded by Madden 06 when it launched on the 360. Trust in the company degraded rapidly and many still compare the products unfavorably to that single video. It has haunted the company ever since.

With the exception of exposure, as the live stream of the presentation was viewed by over 500K on the PlayStation feed alone and there were several other outlets running their own, there was little to gain for EA or 2K having their games on display at this point in the year. The titles in question are more likely to show up around E3 but even then don?t expect them to take precedence over the promotion of the 360/PS3 versions.

Stricter gun laws alone won't stop America's urban violence

Getting guns off the streets or out of the hands of criminals won?t by itself address the problem of gun violence in poor urban communities. America needs to address the underlying circumstances that lead people like my inmate students to gun violence in the first place.

By Peggy Rambach / February 21, 2013

Darrell Hartley takes notes during a class run by The Insight Prison Project in a San Quentin, Calif., prison on Jan. 23, 2008. Op-ed contributor Peggy Rambach says implementing the social programs 'that will eradicate the causes for their fear' mean her inmate 'students won?t be condemned to find sanctuary behind prison walls simply because they were too young to know that they would never find it in a gun.'

Robert Gumpert/Special to the Christian Science Monitor

When my students told me that they hated guns, I was surprised. That?s because my students are criminals incarcerated at Suffolk County House of Correction, a medium security prison in Boston where I teach creative writing. I found out about this relationship with guns the day Mario (I use only his first name to protect his identity) read his poem ?The Hammer.? It described how a gun at first empowers a man, but then, like an addiction, the man is overpowered by the gun, and the gun leads him to his death. Apparently, the poem spoke for the whole class. They all said that they wished they?d never laid their hands on one.

But many of them will pick one up the minute they?re back on the street. Not because of the gun. Because of the street.

In the wake of Newtown, there?s been a huge push for gun control ? not just to protect children in suburban schools from mass shootings but to minimize the more frequent gun violence that dominates our urban streets. As I?ve learned from my students, getting guns off the streets or out of the hands of criminals won?t by itself address the problem of gun violence in poor urban communities. America needs to address the underlying circumstances that lead people such as my students to gun violence in the first place.

Especially if their lives resemble the life of my student Robert. He grew up in the 1980s at the height of the crack epidemic, turned up the volume on the TV to drown out his parents? fights over his father?s habit, and lived in an apartment where a bullet just missed him one day when it flew through his window.

When Robert was 10 years old and walking to school in a snowstorm, a guy shoved a gun in his face and, as Robert wrote, stole his coat, hat, and shoes. Whoever had guns had all the power, Robert said, ?and the GI Joe I played with, had a [big] gun, too.? Robert?s first offense was for illegal possession of a firearm, and so was his second.

My students carried guns, but they also know that guns bring nothing to their life that is good. The day Harvey tried writing a poem about how it felt to be shot, the class spoke over each other to help him get it right, and I found out that just about every other man in the room had been shot, too.

In my student Tali?s short story, a bodega owner didn?t send off his customers with a ?Have a good day,? but said, instead, ?Be careful out there.?

And Mike, running through nearby Charlestown, armed with a 2X4 to do battle against a gang he didn?t know and had nothing against, compared the sound of his and his friends? feet to the march of an infantry.

Apple, Facebook employees hacked via website malware, Java vulnerability

Apple, Facebook hacked via malware in iPhone SDK website - Jason O'Grady

ZDNet's Zack Whittaker detailed the waterhole attack that was injected into a popular iPhone Dev SDK website (no link love due to the potential threat) which compromised the computers of visiting employees from Apple, Facebook?(and potentially Twitter, too) using a zero day?exploit in the Java web plug-in.

A note posted at the site reads (full text below):

iPhoneDevSDK has learned it was used as part of an attack whose victims included large internet companies. We have no reason to believe user data was compromised, but to be safe, we've reset all user passwords.

Apple on Tuesday revealed that some employees' computers had been hacked, but that no data were exposed. According to a statement:

"We identified a small number of systems within Apple that were infected and isolated them from our network. There is no evidence that any data left Apple"

The breaches are now believed to have occurred when employees visited the?iPhone Dev SDK website, which was infected with zero day malware that exploited a vulnerability in the Java browser plug-in, installing malware on their Mac computers.

Apple yesterday released Java for OS X 2013-001?which?uninstalls the Apple-provided Java applet plug-in from all web browsers. Users must then download the latest version of the Java applet plug-in from Oracle in order to use Java applets.?

Bloomberg reports that?the hacks were the work of an Eastern European gang of hackers attempting to steal company secrets, citing "two people familiar with the matter."

I want to echo Zack's warning to?not visit this site in as it may still contain active malware that could lead to infection.

Most importantly: Security holes in Java have been responsible for a number of high-profile attacks recently. All Mac users should install?Java for OS X 2013-001?immediately and only install the Oracle Java plug-in if you absolutely need it.?Also, heed the rest of Zack's warnings and precautions here, which include:

  1. Remove Java immediately
  2. Check your logs, history, browsing records
  3. Run a full, network-wide malware sweep
  4. Take future precautions: Virtualize and isolate risky software

If you run a WordPress blog, patch it up to the latest release, harden it, and never install themes from unknown/insecure sources. If your Wordpress blog has been infected this post will help you clean it.

Update: Eric Romang has posted a forensic timeline of the attacks.

Here's the full text of the warning at the?iPhoneDevSDK:

Today, we were alerted that our site was part of an elaborate and sophisticated attack whose victims included large internet companies. We were alerted through the press, via an AllThingsD article, which cited Facebook. Prior to this article, we had no knowledge of this breach and hadn't been contacted by Facebook, any other company, or any law enforcement about the potential breach. You can read more about the attack via?Facebook's blog post.

As the most widely read dedicated iOS developer forum, we're targeted for attacks frequently. Security is a top priority for us, which is one reason why we switched to Vanilla Forums to host our site last year. Vanilla manages security like pros, and I should be clear that -- as best we can tell right now -- this attack has nothing to do with their software.

Immediately, we were in contact with Facebook's security team, including Joe Sullivan, Facebook's Chief Security Officer, and his team, to learn what they knew. We also contacted Vanilla, our amazing forum hosts, to ensure the problem was not with their software.

What we've learned is that it appears a single administrator account was compromised. The hackers used this account to modify our theme and inject JavaScript into our site. That JavaScript appears to have used a sophisticated, previously unknown exploit to hack into certain user's computers.

We're still trying to determine the exploit's exact timeline and details, but it appears as though it was ended (by the hacker) on January 30, 2013.

As with Facebook, it's important to stress that we have no reason to believe user data was compromised.

Just to be sure, we've reset all users' passwords. Please use our?Forgot Password?feature the next time you log in to reset your password.

We're continuing to work with Facebook, Vanilla, other targeted companies, and law enforcement to find out who is behind this sophisticated attack.

We're very sorry for the inconvenience -- we'll work tirelessly to ensure your data's security now and in the future. I want to thank Vanilla Forums for their help in the matter and for keeping the site secure, as well as Facebook for their help quickly after we reached out.
