Search for missing plane in Antarctica: New Zealand officials

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A search is under way in Antarctica for a missing plane with three Canadians on board, New Zealand rescue authorities said on Thursday.

An emergency locator beacon from a Twin Otter plane flying from the South Pole to the Italian base in Terra Nova was activated late on Wednesday in the northern end of the Queen Alexandra Range.

A search by a U.S. National Guard Hercules failed to spot the plane, and a second flight over the area was planned, the NZ Rescue Coordination Centre said.

Weather conditions in the area were said to be poor, with low cloud and strengthening winds.

A joint New Zealand-United States field rescue team was assembled and a helicopter was due to drop them into the area when conditions improved.

(AP) ? Just when it seemed Chelsea's reputation couldn't sink any lower, along came "Ballboygate."

The Football Association's disciplinary body will review the game after winger Eden Hazard was sent off for kicking a 17-year-old ball boy while attempting to retrieve the ball near the end of a League Cup semifinal match against Swansea on Wednesday.

The Belgian winger has apologized to the ball boy ? and will not face criminal charges ? but will be handed a minimum three-match ban for violent conduct. The FA could increase the suspension in "exceptional circumstances."

The European champions likely will face more accusations that its millionaire players are out of control, soon after the racism scandals involving John Terry, Ashley Cole and John Obi Mikel in 2012.

"There's no defense for that," former referee Dermot Gallagher said. "It was an extreme, but you can't have that at a football match."

The kick sparked a flurry of activity on social networking sites and induced imaginative headlines in British newspapers, such as "Ed Case," ''Occupational Hazard" and "Boots of Hazard." BBC radio has already been referring to it as "Ballboygate."

Some ex-professionals sympathized with Hazard, who was attempting to get the ball into play quickly with Chelsea needing late scoring to force extra time. The match finished 0-0, with Swansea advancing to the final 2-0 on aggregate goals.

"I'm not saying its the correct thing 2 do but when in the heat of the moment u just want the ball," Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar wrote on Twitter.

For Chelsea, controversy seems to hover over the English club.

"I do not know what you expect from me," Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez said. "Do you think we are not disappointed with the situation, that we do not regret what happened?

"Do you want to change things? We cannot."

Chelsea probably wishes it could change several circumstances in the past 12 months, except for its unexpected Champions League title in May.

Team captain Terry was banned for four matches for hurling a racial slur at an opponent during a league game. The case, which also involved Cole, took a year to be resolved.

In November, a complaint by Chelsea that one of its black players ? Mikel ? had been subjected to racist abuse by a referee during a game was dismissed by the FA. Referee Mark Clattenburg was removed from duty by the Premier League for four straight weekends.

Chelsea responded quickly to the latest situation, putting an apology from Hazard on its website. There are reports the ball boy was welcomed into the locker room and treated well by Terry and Frank Lampard, Chelsea's two most senior players.

"Both parties have come together and we've got a mutual bond," Gallagher said. "That is brilliant for the future, but it doesn't escape the fact that the FA are duty bound to act."

Republicans call Obama inaugural speech too partisan. Right or wrong?

President Obama's speech defended liberal touchstones, such as a strong role for government, but it raised issues that could divide GOP ranks, such as gay marriage, equal-pay legislation, and even amnesty for illegal immigrants.

On the first working day of President Obama?s second term, many conservatives are complaining that Mr. Obama?s inaugural address was a paean to liberalism and big government that presages four more years of Washington partisan warfare.

The right charges that Obama?s speech was all about the limits of individual action and the virtue of ?collectivism" and that it ignored the biggest problem in US public life: the growing national debt.

?[Obama] hopes to reorient the American mainstream and locate conservatives outside it,? writes Rich Lowry at National Review Online. ?He wants to take the Founders from the Right and baptize the unreconstructed entitlement state and the progressive agenda in the American creed.?

Republican lawmakers were generally more circumspect but expressed disappointment that Obama?s speech didn?t contain more talk about reaching out and working with the other side.

?I was more hopeful that you?d hear more bipartisanship,? said Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R) of California, House majority whip, in a Tuesday interview on CBS.

What phrases is the right worried about here? Many Democrats were thrilled by Obama?s second inaugural address. They saw it as an unvarnished defense of liberalism and the role of government in American society.

Well, many conservatives did not like Obama?s direct and positive references to gay marriage, equal-pay legislation, and possible amnesty for illegal immigrants. They see these as liberal touchstones and possible wedge issues that might split the Republican Party.

Climate-change legislation is similarly low on the GOP agenda, yet Obama talked at some length about what he sees as the need to take action on this issue.

Obama defended Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security as things that strengthen the nation. ?They free us to take the risks that make this country great,? the president said.

Yet he said nothing about how he would fund these costly entitlement programs going forward, conservatives said.

?In celebrating the power of the government to lead the nation forward, Obama breezed past the costs of an ever-growing public sector and made only passing mention of the country?s most urgent problem as he took the oath to lead it: debt,? wrote Stephen F. Hayes at the right-leaning Weekly Standard.

In the short run, this may mean that in the coming months it is unlikely fiscal negotiations will produce any sort of grand bargain in which the White House accepts trims in exchange for GOP concessions.

That?s because he offered up few sweeteners to Republicans, writes Fred Barnes in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece.

?The highly partisan theme was a departure from recent second inaugural addresses,? according to Mr. Barnes.

In the longer run, Obama?s perceived tilt leftward will endanger red-state or swing-state Democrats, other conservative commentators claim.

There are eight such senators up for reelection in 2014: Sens. Mark Warner of Virginia, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, Kay Hagan of North Carolina, Mark Begich of Alaska, Tim Johnson of South Dakota, Max Baucus of Montana, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, and Mark Udall of Colorado.

These incumbents ?will have nothing to gain by taking tough votes on Obama?s left-wing ideas,? writes Jennifer Rubin on her Right Turn blog at The Washington Post.

That may be true. But Obama?s pivot to a more partisan stance in his inaugural address is simply recognition of political reality, others say.

Voters like to hear references to the need for Washington to work together, and politicians like to believe they can surmount partisan turmoil to get things done. But voters and the two big US political parties have been gradually becoming more polarized for decades, as former Democrats in the South turn Republican and moderate Republicans disappear or turn to the other side, writes George Washington University associate professor of political science John Sides in The Huffington Post.

?My purpose is not to decide which party deserves more blame. It is to point out that polarization and partisanship have deep roots and cannot easily be changed by a single political leader, even the president. This is why Obama?s promise as a post-partisan would never last long,? writes Mr. Sides.

On Speaking to a Literary Agent ? Writing Is Hard Work

Today I stressed all day because I was to receive a phone call from a literary agent from Glass Road Media Management. ?I was so excited to get the phone call, and had a great meeting with Rebeca and Charlie Seitz who own the company. ?Our meeting went well, and we spoke for nearly 90 minutes about publishing and the options available for my latest book? This Broken Earth. ?

I listened intently as they spoke to me about where the publishing industry is going, how my book could change for the better, and what they could do for me as an agency.

A couple of things you must do as a writer if you want to be published traditionally:

1. ?Be Flexible ? Rebeca and Charlie had many suggestions that I could do to my novel to make it sing, and I plan on doing those very things. ?They also coupled that with some very lovely praises. ?I am not making the changes to get it published or because I?m sacrificing my ?art?, but because these people know what works and what doesn?t for a narrative, and it is best for me to take their advice. ?I will be making the changes. ?They are wise changes, and make much sense from a reader?s perspective.

2. ?Be Persistent ? I sent out 40 query letters this last time, and have been doing that for years. ?Get a book about writing these letters, keep them short. ?Agencies get tons of e-mails a day and they have to read through a lot of it. ?Do your homework.

3. ?Be Humble ? Rebeca told me that there are basically three types of writers who get published through publishing houses: A, B, and C writers:

  • C Writers ? These writers are writers who are just starting out. ?They might get their first publishing contract through a small publishing house or even a big one, but because they are not well known, the publishing house will publish their book but expect the writer to do all the legwork, cover design, publicity, and promotion. ?This is expensive and most writers don?t do this.
  • B Writers ? These writers have published a few books and have their sales increase enough for a publisher to spend a little more money on them (i.e. cover design, publicity) but still have to schlep around and go door to door themselves, doing much of their own publicity and legwork.
  • A Writers ? These people are the pinnacle, the celebrity writers who are best sellers. ?These people get the red carpet treatment and publishers spend big bucks to promote them, plus give the author an advance.

All of these writers get an advance for their published work, but how that advance is spent is the key. ?If you are humble and want to spend that advance on publicity, a nice cover, and other things to promote your book, then you can do what self-published authors do but with the perk of getting your book in brick and mortar stores more readily (because the books are returnable) and getting more bang for your buck with the promotion that you were going to do anyway as a self-publisher.

I am still in the talking stage with Glass Road, but things are positive, and I will continue to pursue traditional publishing for? This Broken Earth,?as Rebeca is going to help me get my foot in the door with a couple of publishers soon. ?I am very grateful to them for taking a chance with me, and am excited about moving forward with their company if things initially work out for us.

I?m looking forward to great things, and hope that soon (probably a year) I?ll be seeing? This Broken Earth on brick and mortar book shelves everywhere. ?Until then, I?ll start to work on making the changes, and will also write that next novel.

It's cowboys v. showgirls in Coke's Super Bowl ad

By MAE ANDERSON

updated 3:30 p.m. ET Jan. 22, 2013

NEW YORK - Most people will be cheering for the San Francisco 49ers or Baltimore Ravens during Super Bowl XLVII on Feb. 3.

But Coca-Cola is asking viewers to cheer for three very different groups in an interactive marketing blitz during the big game: a troupe of showgirls, a band of cowboys and a biker-style gang of "badlanders" ? all on a quest for a third-quenching Coke in a desert.

The campaign, which will include TV spots as well as a Web site and interaction with consumers on social media sites like Twitter and Instagram, is the world's largest beverage maker's latest attempt to capture interest of people who watch the Big Game with a second screen such as a tablet or smartphone nearby. With Super Bowl ads costing around $4 million for 30 seconds, it is increasingly important for marketers to make that investment count, extending Super Bowl campaigns online before, during and after the game.

"The second screen is a huge deal for us," said Stuart Kronauge, president of sparkling beverages. "It doesn't matter where consumers are, be it TV, mobile or tablet, we need to be there."

To engage the more than 100 million viewers who tune into the Super Bowl every year (last year, 111 million watched the game, according to Nielsen), The Coca-Cola Co. decided to create its own game.

A cinematic 30-second TV ad created by longtime agency Wieden + Kennedy in Portland, Ore., which will run on network TV and on Youtube.com beginning Tuesday, sets up the game's premise. Three random groups, a troupe of show girls in a pink bus, a group of cowboys, and a gang of so-called "badlanders" on motorcycles and ATVs wearing leather attire, are all in the middle of the desert. They race toward what looks to be a giant Coca-Cola, but it turns out to be a wooden sign that indicates the Coke is 50 miles away.

"Vote now to decide who wins. Cokechase.com," copy reads.

A 60-second version of the spot can be found at that Web address and will air during the first half of the Super Bowl.

Beginning Wednesday through the end of the Super Bowl, which airs Feb. 3 on CBS, users can vote online or send a tweet to choose their favorite group, and try to sabatoge other groups. The winner, tallied in real time, will be shown in an ad immediately following the final whistle of the Super Bowl.

The effort follows Coke's campaign last year that also targeted "second screen" viewers. Ads during the Super Bowl showed animated polar bears watching the Super Bowl and directed viewers to a Web site where people could watch a live feed of the bears throughout the entire game.

In a Webcast on Wednesday, Pio Schunker, senior vice president of integrated marketing, said that although that campaign garnered 9 million viewers who watched an average of 28 minutes, there were some missteps. The effort was too passive and the company did not thank viewers who logged on to watch the bears, he said.

This time, the first 50,000 viewers who vote on cokechase.com will get a free Coke or Diet Coke, if they log on to Coke's rewards site and register.

TOKYO (AP) ? Japanese and U.S. investigators began a probe Monday into the maker of the lithium ion batteries used in Boeing's grounded 787 jets.

Tsutomu Nishijima, a spokesman for GS Yuasa, the battery manufacturer, said investigators visited the company's headquarters in Kyoto, Japan and that Yuasa was cooperating with the probe.

All 50 of the 787 Dreamliners that Boeing has delivered to airlines were grounded after an overheated battery forced the emergency landing of an All Nippon Airways 787 flight last week in western Japan. Boeing has halted deliveries of new planes until it can address the electrical problems.

Monday's investigation involved an introductory meeting and factory tour, with deeper studies into product quality and other issues to follow as the probe continues, said Tatsuyuki Shimazu, the chief air worthiness engineer at the Civil Aviation Bureau's Aviation Safety Department.

Two investigators from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and an investigator from Japan's government were conducting the probe into how the batteries are made and assembled and into any quality issues, he said.

"We are in the midst of collecting information, so as to whether there is a problem or not has not yet been determined," Shimazu said.

Nishijima of GS Yuasa said he could not comment on details of the investigation.

The burned insides of the ANA battery showed it received voltage in excess of its design limits. However, a battery that caught fire in a Japan Airlines Boeing 787 in Boston earlier this month was found not to have been overcharged.

U.S. government investigators said there could still be problems with wiring or other charging components.

In the U.S., investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board planned to meet Tuesday with officials from Securaplane Technologies Inc., manufacturer of the charger for the 787s lithium ion batteries, at the company's headquarters in Tucson, Ariz., said Kelly Nantel, a spokeswoman for the board.
