From time to time, everyone must deal with criticism. Although it is certainly never pleasant, learning how to handle criticism in an effective manner can go a long way toward helping you to lead a happier life as well as address areas in your life that may need to be improved.
NLP(Neuro-Linguistic Programming) can assist in handling criticism in an appropriate fashion. One of the reasons that we are often not able to handle criticism appropriately is that we are unable to view it in an objective fashion. We are too closely related to the situation and view it in a manner that is too personal. We must remove ourselves from the situation. The dissociative frame can prove to be helpful in this regard because it removes the emotion and allows us to view the criticism objectively.
The First Step
The first step is to make sure that you have removed yourself from the situation. This is done by entering a dissociative state. Make sure that you are seeing yourself from a distance. Remind yourself that you are not actually the person that is receiving the criticism, instead you are a bystander.
Step Two
The next step is to disassociate yourself from the actual criticism. This can be one of the most difficult aspects of the process and you may need to practice this skill some in order to completely master it.
Step Three
Now, pretend that you are watching a movie. It is not you that is receiving the criticism. Instead, you are watching it on a movie screen. You can even ask questions to the person who is providing the criticism in order to receive more relevant information for forming the movie.
Step Four
Now, you must evaluate the criticism that has been provided. You will need to determine the parts of the criticism with which you agree and the parts that you do not agree with.
Step Five
The next step involves forming your response to the criticism. You have all of the information that is needed in order to discuss the criticism. Begin by discussing the parts of the criticism that you agree with and then discuss those areas that you do not agree with. Do not forget to provide the reason why you do not agree with certain parts.
Step Six
Now, you are going to work on establishing a change in your behavior based upon the information that you received from the criticism. You might even begin to imagine a situation in which you have changed your behavior and you see yourself practicing that changed behavior.
The Final Step
The last step is to take out all of the barriers that are preventing you from accomplishing the changed behavior. Provide yourself with time to practice this new behavior and then revel in the benefits that it provides you.
