Birds need to eat a nutritionally sound diet in order to live a long life. A diet that is not rich in important nutrients can lead to malnutrition and to a much shorter length of life. Start off by feeding your bird right from the beginning.
Parrots and most other birds in the same family can eat a large variety of different foods. Seeds should not be the only thing you feed a parrot. Unfortunately, most new owners don?t know any better, and that is all they feed them. Seeds contain mostly fat and not enough protein and very few vitamins.
Birds are able to eat most foods humans eat, though it is best for them to eat whole grains, pretzels, pasta and bread. Foods high in fat should be avoided. Make sure that, of all fruits, you don?t feed birds avocados, since they are toxic to them.
You should feed your birds beans and legumes, and also fruits and vegetables. Some birds resist new foods at first while others are open to trying many new things. Even if your bird refuses to eat things he is not familiar with, continue offering new foods.
Introduce new things slowly. Offer fresh foods for about an hour twice a day. Fresh food left there for too long can develop bacteria and make the bird sick.
Your bird should be fed two times per day. The bird will be hungrier and much more active that way. Also, if the bird is hungry, it will be willing to try new foods you are trying to introduce to it. Another advantage of feeding at the same time every day, is the fact that you will be able to see how much the bird eats. Should the bird not eat well, make sure you get medical attention promptly.
If your bird is fussy and will only eat certain foods, try cooking its vegetables. Keep seeds away, aside from mealtimes, until your bird decides it is going to try other healthy foods.
And, healthy birds need water as well. Your bird should always have plenty of fresh water to drink. Since your bird?s water bowl will get dirty very easily, wash it with hot water and soap every day. Once every other week you should clean your bird?s water dish with a solution containing bleach. It?s also a good idea to give your bird some water soluble vitamins you can add to its drinking water every day.
If properly taken care of, birds can make good pets and they can live a long, happy life. Proper care of birds includes maintaining a healthy diet of seeds, vegetables and fruit.
