Westmoreland Credit Union reaches out

Dalton Laing, Gleaner Writer

SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland:The Westmoreland Co-operative Credit Union Limited (WCCUL) participated in the islandwide outreach initiative of the Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League (JCCUL) in observing a Soup and Soap Day at the local infirmary in Savanna-la-Mar.

A team from WCCUL went to the infirmary where the 82 residents - 47 males and 35 females - were treated to soup at lunchtime. They were also presented with toiletries.

Katrina Grant, promotions and publicity manager at the WCCUL, said, "We are simply fulfilling our social responsibility as a corporate entity."

Grant also said that the outreach was merely one of the credit union's activities, which also include Grade Six Achievement Test bursaries, financing medical expenses for the less fortunate, providing houses and other necessities for the needy, and sponsorship of events.

Matron Janet Carol was grateful for the gesture. She, however, expressed concerns about the state of the facility.

Poor conditions

"We are grateful for the new female ward, but the male one is old and dilapidated," she said. In addition, the building that is being used as the administrative offices was reconditioned for use as the dining area, so there is need for office space.

The Soup and Soap Day was in keeping with Credit Union Week in Westmoreland, which started on Sunday with a church service at the Central Tabernacle Deliverance Centre in Savanna-la-Mar, followed by a series of town meetings and an appreciation day for members.

During the church service, General Manager Christine Sinclair-Haughton outlined the benefits to be derived from membership with the WCCUL.

"The credit union movement is here to serve you and to provide the path to your financial freedom," Sinclair-Haughton said.
