Gold rises as consumer confidence weakens (AP)

Gold prices are climbing after new reports show consumers on both sides of the Atlantic are worried about the economy.

Gold rose $38.20 Tuesday to end at $1,829.80 per ounce. The price is up 13 percent since Aug. 1.

The reports found that consumer confidence fell in August in the United States and the 17 countries that use the euro. The news comes as government leaders in both regions struggle with financial problems.

In that uncertain environment, investors buy more stable assets, such as gold, until there is a better idea of where the global economy is headed.

Meanwhile, oil prices are rising as traders speculate that supplies may be tighter after Hurricane Irene forced several refineries and petroleum terminals to reduce production or shut down.

David Koepp to Write Johnny Depp's Thin Man

david-koepp-the-thin-man-slice-01

Screenwriter David Koepp (Spider-Man) has been tapped to write Rob Marshall?s adaptation of Dashiell Hammett?s The Thin Man starring Johnny Depp.? The 1934 novel follows retired detective Nick Charles who is trying to happily live his life with his charming wife Nora and their dog Asta.? However, when one of Charles? former client Clyde Wynant goes missing and his secretary turns up dead, Nick is reluctantly drawn back into the case and the web of intrigue created by Wynant?s terrible family. Also, everyone in the book, particularly Nick and Nora, drinks like a fish but hardly anyone gets drunk.? Hammett?s novel was successfully adapted into a franchise starring William Powell and Myrna Loy although Hammett only wrote one novel featuring Nick and Nora.

Hit the jump for more on this story and my thoughts on adapting The Thin Man.

the-thin-man-book-coverWhile The Lone Ranger currently works through its budget issues, Depp is looking to stay busy and The Thin Man would provide a reunion not only with Marshall (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) but with Koepp who wrote and directed the adaptation of Stephen King?s Secret Window.? Deadline reports that there?s no new script of The Thin Man so Koepp will be working from scratch.

However, Deadline adds that this won?t be a direct adaptation of the book but rather ?the original intention is to take elements of the first two films and work them into one film, putting it into a period setting and giving it a Sherlock Holmes-like stylized treatment.?? I?ve only seen the first film, but I?m sick and tired of every period movie now getting the ?Sherlock Holmes? treatment.? Perhaps Hollywood thinks that modern audiences have attention spans too short to accept anything that doesn?t fly at them a mile-a-minute and filled to the brim with anachronisms, and to tell the truth, Hollywood is probably right.

I?m not opposed to working from the films rather than the novel because The Thin Man is a rare instance where the movie is better than the book.? I?m a big Hammett fan, but the novel meanders, Nora is an underdeveloped character, we never really get to know Charles other than he?s bored by all the scheming around him, and the way the dialogue is written makes it difficult to follow who?s talking (obviously that last issue isn?t a problem for a movie). But the basic premise is good and Koepp?s real challenge isn?t in exceeding the novel but the original film.? My concern lays more with Depp and Marshall seeing as their first collaboration, Pirates 4, was one of the worst movies I?ve seen this year.

Koepp was recently hired to work on the script for Paramount?s Jack Ryan reboot. ?His latest directorial effort, the thriller Premium Rush starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Shannon, is due out January 13, 2012.

[Update: I overlooked that Marshall may want to throw in a musical number or two.? I presume they would be worked in as shows that Nick and Nora go to because if the main characters start breaking out into song and dance...hoo boy.? I'm not against musicals.? I'm against sporadic musicals.]

Health And Fitness | Do You Want A Cure For Hormonal Acne? Go ...

Hormonal acne affects most people at some time in their lives. It undermines a person's self-regard, and so there's a big incentive to get rid of it. Sadly, many sufferers waste their time and money on treatments that don't work. Don't you make that same mistake. You can cure hormonal acne fast and permanently.

Hormones regulate your body's chemical processes. Hormonal shifts occur naturally at certain times in your life. The most familiar example is the onset of puberty when the human body begins manufacturing hormones called androgens.

Your genetic make-up governs how your body reacts to a hormonal imbalance. For example, your sebaceous glands may have a genetic tendency to manufacture extra oil if a hormonal imbalance develops in your body. In acne sufferers, that excess oil clogs up pores in the skin, creating perfect conditions for bacteria, and creating an infection that develops into skin acne.

Your body can have several triggers that contribute to hormonal acne. Stress due to a lack of sleep, an unhealthy diet, poor internal and external hygiene, and a build-up of toxins in your blood and lymph are common examples. These triggers invariably interact, exacerbating each other's impact on your condition.

The majority of acne sufferers make two big mistakes. Firstly, they use so called cures that target acne symptoms (e.g. the blackheads on their neck) but ignore acne triggers. For example, using high-priced chemicals to remove excess oil from your skin doesn't do anything to fix the hormonal imbalance making your oil glands hyperactive in the first place. Secondly, they use a treatment that neutralises only some of the triggers causing their acne. For instance, a change in diet won't eliminate a hormonal imbalance arising from an unhealthy diet and a general build-up of toxins in your body.

Obviously, a person's internal acne environment is a very complex place. Anybody who seriously wants to get rid of hormonal acne needs a treatment that:

1. Neutralises the internal causes of their acne

2. Gets rid of acne quickly and permanently

3. Doesn't use prescription drugs or high-priced chemicals that have unpleasant side-effects

4. Works on all areas of their body, including the face and back, where acne can be particularly severe

5. Makes them look and feel better, and gives back their self-regard and confidence

6. Is effective against all types of skin acne, including severe forms such as cysts

7. Provides ongoing counselling and support from knowledgeable health specialists

8. Is realistic, and easy to include in their current lifestyle

9. Is easily adapted into a strategy that satisfies their body's needs. After all, no two people are the same

10. Re-establishes and maintains their body's natural internal balance

11. Is simple and follows a methodical, systematic format

The holistic approach is a safe, natural alternative that has permanently cured many sufferers of hormonal acne. It doesn't resort to high-priced drugs or creams; it's straightforward and works quickly. Most important, the holistic method can be adapted to meet your body's specific needs and neutralise all the triggers that bring on stubborn acne. It's the preferred option for thousands of people, and will take you down the path to a life without acne.

BC-FBC--Texas A&M-Big 12 Letter,1st Ld-Writethru, FBC

BC-FBC--Texas A&M-Big 12 Letter, 1st Ld-Writethru,0628Aggies receive letter from Big 12Eds: Adds details.By KRISTIE RIEKENAP Sports Writer

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) ? Texas A&M received a letter from Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe on Monday outlining the withdrawal procedure should the Aggies decide to leave the league.

University spokesman Jason Cook said the letter "outlines the withdrawal procedures according to the financial provisions of the Big 12 bylaws and mutual waivers of legal claims."

Cook wouldn't provide any other details of the letter or comment on what A&M's next step might be.

The Aggies are interested in joining the Southeastern Conference and the letter comes less than a week after they formally told Beebe they are exploring their options and asked for the conference to outline the process if they decide to leave. The league's board of directors addressed the possible departure of the Aggies this weekend.

"I certainly appreciate the discussion among the Big 12 presidents/chancellors and the expression of their desire for Texas A&M to remain in the conference," Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin said in a statement. "We all agree that Texas A&M is an extremely valuable institution; thus, it is incumbent upon me, as the president of the university, to ensure that we are in a position to enhance our national visibility and future financial opportunity."

Loftin added this is a "complex and long-term decision," but "it is not our intent to prolong our conference exploration for an extended period of time."

The SEC said earlier this month it was happy with its current 12-school membership but left the door open to expansion. Loftin then received authority from the board of regents to take any action he deems necessary in terms of realignment.

There is concern that a departure by the Aggies could jeopardize the future of the Big 12, which is down to 10 teams after Nebraska (Big Ten) and Colorado (Pac-12) left the league last July. Loftin has said the Aggies would consider how their departure would impact the future of Big 12 before any decision is made.

The Big 12 would need to find a team to replace the Aggies if they exit the conference and there has been a lot of speculation about possible schools. So far, the only school to publicly express interest in moving to the Big 12 is SMU. Athletic director Steve Orsini said he's had informal talks with Big 12 officials for some time to inform them of the school's improvements and growth.

In the letter Loftin sent to the Big 12 last week, he said if the Aggies leave, they would want to do it in a manner that complies with league bylaws. He also has said financial concerns will factor into any decision to leave; the school likely would face an exit fee.

The Big 12, including Texas A&M, agreed to a 13-year television deal with Fox Sports in April worth more than $1 billion. There is a chance the contract could be voided if the Aggies leave the conference, which could lead to legal issues for Texas A&M and its new league.

The Big 12 declined to comment on Monday's letter.

2M lose power as Hurricane Irene moves north

Two million homes and businesses were without power early Sunday as Hurricane Irene slammed into the East Coast and charged north.

Winds of up to 115 miles per hour whipped across the Eastern Seaboard, ripping power lines from poles and snapping trees in half. Hospitals, emergency call centers and other crucial facilities were holding up, but officials said it could get much worse as Irene churns north.

Gasoline supplies were falling as drivers fill up before leaving town or just top off their tanks as a precaution before the storm hits. Pump prices rose about 3 cents per gallon overnight in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Dominion Resources reported outages for more than 900,000 of its customers in Virginia and North Carolina, while Progress Energy reported 190,000 customers without power.

Duke Energy said 1,500 customers were in the dark. Pepco, which serves Maryland, Washington D.C., parts of New Jersey and Delaware, reported nearly 80,000 outages. Baltimore Gas & Electric said nearly 250,000 of its customers were without power.

In eastern Pennsylvania, PECO reported nearly 140,000 customers without power. Along the Jersey shore, Jersey Central Power & Light was reporting more than 80,000 outages.

New York's biggest utility, Consolidated Edison, said it could cut power to the city's most vulnerable areas if the storm causes serious flooding. Salt water and rain can damage electrical equipment.

ConEd operations chief John Miksad said the utility doesn't expect to cut power before the storm hits, but flooding Sunday could bring a shutdown to areas including the southern tip of Manhattan. That would cut off power to major Wall Street institutions through parts of next week.

The New York Stock Exchange has backup generators and can run on its own, a spokesman said. The exchange expects to open as usual Monday morning, though it may change plans depending on the severity of the storm.

New York is regularly blasted by winter storms, but Miksad said this hurricane will be different. Irene's wind will pack a stronger punch than a nor'easter last March that knocked out power to 175,000 customers, he said.

ConEd has called in crews from as far as Colorado to help repair damage from the storm.

Irene is expected to be a brutal test for Middle Atlantic States, which haven't seen a hurricane since 1999. The storm is expected to stay just offshore ? and thus retain much of its power ? as it inches up the coast from North Carolina to New England. When a hurricane hits land, wind speeds diminish.

The entire Eastern Seaboard lies in the storm's projected path. Flooding and damage from winds are likely. North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island have declared emergencies. For the first time, New York City ordered people in low-lying areas to evacuate.

Power companies have called in several hundred workers from surrounding states to help. Crews were rushing out between bands in the hurricane, when the wind and rain ease. They're looking for damage first at towering transmission lines, where an outage could put an entire county in the dark.

The storm has already caused gasoline supplies to fall as refueling barges wait out the storm off the coast. Widespread power outages could lead to fuel shortages as gas stations are no longer able to pump gas or have trouble replenishing their own gas supplies.

"Power is the lifeblood of oil supply on the East Coast," said Ben Brockwell of the Oil Price Information Service, which tracks gasoline shipments around the country.

Some gas stations in New Jersey reported that they'd run out of fuel. Those shortages could become more widespread.

Retail gas prices were mostly unchanged in many cities that are expected to be hit this weekend. Rules against price gouging at gas stations took effect throughout Middle Atlantic states. Authorities will be looking for stations that try to take advantage of panicked drivers.

Pump prices were up slightly overnight, as much as 3 cents per gallon, to $3.44 in Philadelphia and $3.49 in New Jersey's Atlantic-Cape May metro area. They seemed to hold in other areas, rising a penny or so on average in Maryland, Virginia and the Carolinas.

The Colonial Pipeline, which transports gasoline and other fuels from the Gulf Coast to the Northeast, stopped fuel deliveries to Selma, N.C., and to Virginia's Tidewater area as the storm knocked out power. Pipeline spokesman Steve Baker said the pipeline may cut off deliveries further in Virginia and Maryland as the storm moves north.

Refineries, which make fuel from oil, have started to slow operations as Irene approaches.

OPIS says East Coast refineries will cut operating rates 10 to 25 percent in the next few days. Refineries in the Gulf Coast and the West should be able to keep supplies flowing to the rest of the country.

Refineries along the Louisiana Coast produce more than three times the gasoline and fuel of their East Coast counterparts, according to the Energy Information Administration. East Coast demand is going to fall as businesses close and people hunker down at home.

How barrier islands survive fury of storms

The incoming fury of Hurricane Irene has prompted mandatory evacuations along the Outer Banks of North Carolina. These narrow strips of sand are barrier islands, shaped by thousands of years of waves and tides. Low-lying barrier islands are particularly vulnerable to pounding by storms. Left to their own devices, however, these sandy outposts are surprisingly resilient, geologists say.

"They have ways of protecting themselves," said George Voulgaris, a professor of marine and geological sciences at the University of South Carolina. "Yes, a hurricane will make lots of changes, but the barrier island will recover over time."

Humans can disrupt this process by building on barrier islands, disrupting the natural movement of sand, Voulgaris told LiveScience.

Building a barrier
No one is entirely sure how the barrier islands that line the East and Gulf coasts formed. One theory, says Brian Romans, a sedimentary geologist at Virginia Tech, is that the islands accumulate over time from sandbars. Waves break over a submerged sandbar, dropping sand and sediment with each crash, until an island gradually rises out of the ocean.

Another theory is that the islands form from spits of sand originally attached to the mainland. Waves carry sediment parallel to the shore to create these spits, and the connection between spit and shore is later broken by a storm.

"Either way, if the islands persist long enough and vegetation starts to grow on them, that stabilizes them even more," Romans told LiveScience.

According to Voulgaris, the sandbar theory is more likely along the East Coast, because there would have to be a headland protruding off the coast to provide a place for a spit to start growing. You don't see such headlands along the eastern coast, Voulgaris said.

10,000 years of change
The barrier islands along the East Coast are likely no older than 7,000 to 10,000 years, Voulgaris said. Earlier than that, he said, sea levels were rising rapidly as the last ice age ended and glaciers melted. Relatively stable sea levels in the last 7,000 to 10,000 years would have enabled the islands to form.

The islands' size and shape depend on the vagaries of the tides and waves. In South Carolina and Georgia, barrier islands tend to be wide and broken up by tidal inlets, in contrast to North Carolina's long and narrow Outer Banks. The reason, Voulgaris said, is that as you move south, the difference between high and low tide is greater. The larger volume of water moving past the southern islands toward the mainland opens more channels in the barrier islands, separating them. The tides also pile more sand on the back of barrier islands, widening them farther south.

Up north, the difference between high and low tide is smaller and the waves are stronger. The waves tend to move sand parallel to shore, smearing long, narrow strips of sand along the coast.

Regenerating islands
Storms can inundate barrier islands, so they aren't such a safe place to be when a hurricane is approaching. Some storms even wipe barrier islands off the map. This disappearing act isn't necessarily permanent, however.

"In the Gulf Coast, some of the barrier islands off the Mississippi River get washed out during big storms but then will come back the next season or a couple seasons later," Romans said. "Just the very tops of them get chopped off, essentially."

The islands are able to "grow" back because the sand doesn't move far, often just offshore, Voulgaris said.

"When the hurricane passes, milder waves come to rebuild, using the same sand that has been shifted to different locations," Voulgaris said.

The problem comes when humans build beach homes and fishing piers on these dynamic environments, Voulgaris said. Humans are unwilling to wait for nature to rebuild what's been lost, and man-made structures may disrupt the redistribution of sand, meaning that when milder waves do come, they have nothing to rebuild with. For instance, the Chandeleur Islands in the Gulf of Mexico have not recovered the ?surface area they lost in Hurricane Katrina in 2005, LiveScience reported last year, because dams and other diversions along the Mississippi River are keeping island-building sediment out of the Gulf.

For the most part, though, it's not nature that suffers the most when a monster like Hurricane Irene is screaming toward shore.

"Hurricanes are very impressive. It's a lot of power. But the destruction is more in human-made structures," Voulgaris said. "Nature usually recovers."

Dominique Strauss-Kahn Retrieves Passport | Morrison World News

Dominique Strauss-Kahn was given back his passport Thursday, his legal team said, clearing the way for the former IMF head to travel abroad for the first time since his arrest three months ago on sex crime charges.

?I can confirm that the New York Police Department and the Office of the District Attorney returned Mr Strauss-Kahn?s passport,? Shawn Naunton, from the French politician?s legal team, said after a brief visit to his Manhattan home.

The DA?s office said it could no longer pursue the case because while Mr Strauss-Kahn did engage in sex with a Manhattan hotel maid, her repeated lying to investigators made it impossible to prove beyond a reasonable doubt her allegations of sexual assault.

?As you all know, Mr Strauss-Kahn?s freedom was restored on Tuesday and the criminal charges were dismissed. It?s gratifying to return his passport to him today,? Naunton said.

Mr Strauss-Kahn is believed to be preparing to return to France, where until his arrest he was seen as a leading prospect to become president in elections next year.

Despite the dismissal of charges, the affair remains a dark cloud over his reputation.

A spokesman at the International Monetary Fund, where Mr Strauss-Kahn had to give up the leadership in the wake of his arrest, said that a visit was expected ?as early as next week.?

The IMF, which plays a crucial but often controversial role in aiding countries in financial straits, was left reeling after Strauss-Kahn resigned as chief in May in the middle of tense negotiations over Greece?s massive bail-out.

?Like any former managing director of the IMF, Mr Strauss-Kahn would be welcome to visit the Fund. I understand that he intends to make a personal visit to headquarters,? IMF spokesman David Hawley told a press briefing.

?It?s a personal visit ? I expect he would meet with the staff. I don?t have any further details on the visit, which is not yet fully fleshed out,? he said.

The case against Strauss-Kahn, 62, sensationally collapsed after prosecutors said his accuser, Guinean immigrant Nafissatou Diallo, could no longer be believed.

She had lied both about details of the case and about her background, destroying her credibility in a he-said/she-said trial.

The maid?s lawyer continues to argue that his client has been denied her right to justice and that prosecutors turned their backs on the medical evidence that showed a brief sex act took place in the hotel room. He has filed a civil lawsuit on Diallo?s behalf seeking unspecified monetary damages.

Bucs beat Dolphins

By FRED GOODALL

updated 12:15 a.m. ET Aug. 28, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. - Raheem Morris joked that maybe it's time he stop harping about how the Tampa Bay Buccaneers need to play better early in games.

Josh Freeman directed a touchdown drive just before halftime and third-string quarterback Rudy Carpenter capped a fourth-quarter scoring drive with a 7-yard TD pass to Nathan Overbay with 3:11 remaining, giving the Bucs a 17-13 preseason victory over the Miami Dolphins on Saturday night.

"I'm going to stop talking about starting faster and enjoy the way these guys finish," Morris said.

Freeman missed several open receivers and nearly had a couple passes intercepted, but left on a high note after ending his night with a six-play, 54-yard march that made it 10-10.

The third-year pro probably will not play much ? if at all ? Thursday night in the preseason finale at Houston. That's OK as far as Freeman is concerned.

Afterall, he's seen extensive play this month after barely playing in the preseason a year ago, when he injured the thumb on his throwing hand in the first exhibition.

"He's way ahead of where he was at this time last year," Morris said.

"I think we're right where we need to be," Freeman added, assessing the progress of the offense. "I missed a couple of throws. ... That comes with getting more and more game reps and getting in more of a rhythm, but that's nothing I'm really concerned about."

The Bucs (2-1) overcame 15 penalties for 135 yards in a performance not nearly as crisp as they'd hoped for coming off last week's sloppy, lopsided loss to New England.

Brandon Marshall scored on a 60-yard reception from Chad Henne and Dan Carpenter kicked field goals of 21 and 47 yards for the Dolphins (2-1), who were penalized 11 times for 76 yards themselves.

"We were getting in our own way," Miami tight end Anthony Fasano said.

The Bucs learned before the game that cornerback Aqib Talib won't be suspended for any of the season for his arrest in connection with an offseason shooting in Texas.

The fourth-year pro is facing a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Police in the Dallas suburb of Garland say they believe the 25-year-old player and his mother shot at a man in March. Talib's trial is set for March 2012, and the NFL could revisit the matter pending the outcome of the case.

"We discussed Aqib's situation and they informed us he will not be suspended for the 2011 football season," Dominik said. "Certainly we and the National Football League will continue to track the case, and we will proceed accordingly however that pans out."

Talib sat out Saturday night because of a hamstring injury that also sidelined him the first two weeks of the preseason. He led the Bucs with six interceptions in 2010, despite being suspended without pay for the season opener for violating the league's personal conduct policy, and four other games after suffering a season-ending hip injury.

Freeman and the rest of Tampa Bay's starters were hoping to atone for a poor performance against New England. The first-team offense gained 34 yards in a little less than a half, and Tom Brady made it look easy by scoring on four of the Patriots' first five possessions to build a 28-0 lead.

With the exception of a couple of early third-down completions and a short throw to LeGarrette Blount that the second-year running back turned into a 52-yard gain to set up a field goal, Freeman had little to show before getting his team into the end zone in the final minute of the opening half.

The third-year quarterback set up Earnest Graham's 2-yard TD run with a 15-yard completion to his fullback and a 17-yard scramble to the Miami 2.

Freeman finished 12 of 23 for 149 yards and hasn't turned over the ball this preseason. He did have two potential interceptions dropped and had one pick nullified by a penalty.

Henne played into the third quarter and was sacked three times. He went 10 of 13 for 175 yards and one touchdown, connecting with Marshall on a sideline throw that was defended well by Bucs cornerback E.J. Biggers, starting in place of Talib.

Marshall made the catch inside the Tampa Bay 35, managed to stay in bounds before cutting back toward the middle past safety Cody Grimm. He and stiff-armed linebacker Quincy Black to remain on his feet and get into the end zone for a 7-0 lead.

"That's definitely a confidence booster out there ... That we can put the ball up and let him go get it and make some big plays out there," Henne said. "That's what he is. Give him the ball, give him a shot where he can make a big play down the field."

Marshall's second-quarter fumble, forced by Biggers at the end of a 30-yard catch and run, led to Tampa Bay's touchdown just before the half.

Miami coach Tony Sparano said the Dolphins self-destructed offensively after Marshall's early touchdown.

"Not a little bit, a lot," the coach said. "There were penalties, minus plays, and a couple of rushing attempts that put us behind the sticks."

The good thing, Sparano said he told his team: "It's fixable."

Darwin's butterflies? Spectacular species radiation in the Caribbean studied with 'DNA barcoding'

ScienceDaily (Aug. 25, 2011) ? In one of the first taxonomic revisions of Neotropical butterflies that utilizes 'DNA barcoding', Andrei Sourakov (University of Florida, Florida Museum of Natural History) and Evgeny Zakharov (University of Guelph, Canadian Centre for DNA Barcoding at the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario) uncovered a spectacular degree of evolutionary divergence within the satyrine butterfly genus Calisto.

The study was published in the open-access journal Comparative Cytogenetics.

The Caribbean has a remarkable diversity of habitats and wildlife. More than 200 species of butterflies belonging to some 100 genera live on the islands, with most genera represented by a single species. Many species are endemic to the region, that is they do not occur anywhere else. This distinctive fauna apparently arose as a result of species immigrating from the mainland at some point during the islands' history, and later evolving mostly into island isolates.

The satyrine butterfly genus Calisto is the most notable of them, because it has the largest number of extant species compared to other butterfly genera found in the region. Until the present revision, Calisto had comprised 54 named taxa, which occupy an extremely diverse array of habitats, suggestive of adaptive radiation on the scale of other classic examples, such as the Gal?pagos or Darwin's finches.

The authors of the study applied a new set of molecular characters to clarify the classification and evolution of Calisto butterflies. The 'DNA barcoding' technique is based on the analysis of short, standardized gene region within mitochondrial DNA, and provides an efficient method for species identification. As a result, Calisto now contains 34 species and 17 subspecies and new data shed light on the general evolutionary history of the genus.

The discovered spectacular degree of DNA divergence suggests a diversification period of 4-8 million years. Species of Calisto that occur only in Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Jamaica were found likely to have evolved from various Hispaniolan ancestors. The study found no support for previously advocated theories of evolution through geographic separation events due to plate tectonics. The evolutionary time-frame and the phylogenetic position of non-Hispaniolan taxa suggest that ancient dispersal events from Hispaniola to other islands and adaptive radiation within Hispaniola are likely responsible for the diversification within the genus Calisto.

Higher durable-goods orders ease economic worries (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A surge in demand for autos and aircraft drove orders for long-lasting manufactured goods higher in July, easing fears that the economy might be on the verge of another recession.

The rebound in the auto industry helped offset a decline in orders for most other factory goods.

Stocks rose after the better-than-expected report showed the biggest increase in durable-goods orders since March, when the Japan earthquake disrupted supply chains and slowed auto production.

The Dow Jones industrial average jumped about 100 points after the report came out. It later gave back some of those gains to be up more than 40 points in the afternoon. Broader indexes were mixed.

Overall orders for durable goods rose 4 percent last month, the Commerce Department said Wednesday.

The report "reinforces other data that the economy wasn't at serious risk of recession through July," said David Resler, chief U.S. economist at Nomura Securities. Retail sales and industrial production also held up well last month, he said.

The data did offer a cautionary signal: a key category that tracks business investment plans fell 1.5 percent, the biggest drop in six months. That suggests businesses are pulling back on spending. Orders in all other major categories dropped, including computers, electronic goods, and machinery.

Resler and other economists also warned that the turmoil in the stock markets could cause businesses to pull back further this month.

"It remains to be seen whether firms cancelled or postponed planned orders," Paul Dales, an economist at Capital Economics, said in note to clients.

A durable good is a product that is expected to last at least three years. Economists view the report cautiously because orders tend to fluctuate from month to month.

Excluding transportation goods, orders rose just 0.7 percent. It was the third straight gain in so-called core orders. Demand for primary metals surged 10.3 percent, the most since last November. Some of that increase was likely due to higher prices for metals such as copper.

Overall, orders rose to a seasonally adjusted $201.5 billion in July. That is 35 percent higher than the recession low hit in April 2009. But it is still 18 percent below the level in December 2007, when the recession began.

Demand for autos and auto parts jumped 11.5 percent, the most in eight years. Aircraft orders, a volatile category, soared 43.4 percent, after falling 24 percent in June.

Auto production is rebounding after a slowdown caused by the Japan earthquake. The Federal Reserve reported last week that factory output rose 0.6 percent in July, mostly because of an increase in auto production.

A big order by American Airlines helped boost the aircraft sector. American Airlines ordered 100 new Boeing 737 planes with fuel-efficient engines in July.

Manufacturing has been a key source of economic growth since the recession officially ended in June 2009. But it began to slump this spring, along with the broader economy.

Orders fell in April and June, partly because of supply disruptions stemming from the March 11 earthquake in Japan. And a spike in gas prices earlier this year cut into consumer spending, reducing demand for big-ticket items, such as computers, appliances and furniture.

Several recent reports suggest the sector could be slowing further. A survey by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia showed that manufacturing in the mid-Atlantic region contracted in August by the most in more than two years. A Richmond Fed survey released Tuesday and a New York Fed survey last week also pointed to slowdowns in those areas, although not as severe as the Philadelphia region.

Economists predict further weakness, even as temporary factors fade. Falling stock prices and fear of another recession may persuade consumers and businesses to hold back on big purchases. That could slow orders for industrial machinery, electronic goods and appliances.

Analysts have been scaling back their forecasts for economic growth for this year and next.

Michael Feroli, an economist at JPMorgan Chase, projects the economy will expand at only a 1 percent annual rate in the second half of the year. That's not much better than the 0.8 percent growth that the government reported for the first half of the year.

The Federal Reserve this month said that it expects weak growth for the next two years. As a result, it said that it plans to keep its short-term interest rate near zero until at least mid-2013.

The Fed has limited options for stimulating growth. And a renewed focus on deficit reduction in Washington, which could result in steep spending cuts or tax increases, could weaken the economy further.

Investors hope that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke announces another round of bond purchases on Friday in a highly anticipated speech in Jackson Hole, Wyo. The bond purchases, known as quantitative easing, are designed to keep interest rates low and boost stock prices. But economists don't expect Bernanke to launch any major efforts.

The Best Mineral Makeup Tips for Mature Skin ? Beauty, Health and ...

As we age our natural coloring begins to fade and our skin tone becomes less vibrant and our skin begins to stretch and lose shape as collagen and elastin production, our internal scaffolding begins to slow down. Spidery lines appear around the eyes and lips become paler, thinner and less defined. Makeup is a great pick me up helping to address some of these aging concerns and fortunately with the use of colors, textures and placement of makeup, it can help to enhance your features in the best possible way.

Skin prep: It is really important that you prepare the base before you apply your makeup. Aging skin can often be dull and lack lustre, which is why so it needs exfoliating regularly, helping to remove any dead dry skin cells and encourage cellular turnover. Our skin also starts to lose water as it ages, so it is important to keep the skin well hydrated at all times. Opt for a moisture quenching mask applied ten minutes before your makeup that will give your base a lovely dewy finish. Another common problem with mature skin is lines around the mouth and eyes, which can occur because of life style factors and the menopause, help soften these lines through the use of gentle hydrating creams and a good home care regime.

Concealer: Try to avoid using a concealer under the eyes unless absolutely necessary, because the density of the product will settle into the creases and emphasize fine lines and wrinkles. If you feel you simply can?t do without concealer, then apply a light reflecting formula and blend in well with your foundation base.

Foundation: Often a mature skin can become dry and flaky so look for one with a moisturizing base. Liquid formulations are great, one that contains light reflecting foundation that will help to make lines less noticeable and give your skin a luminous quality. Some foundations offer anti aging protection by introducing a buffer between the pigment and the skin, surrounding the actual pigment within the skin with moisturizing liquids, thus helping to prevent makeup from settling into any fine lines and wrinkles

Blusher: Let your blusher help restore a youthful glow to a fading complexion. Blusher can hide a multitude of sins, helping to create a radiant complexion and soften fine lines. As we as collagen and elastin within the dermis depletes causing changes in the shape of the face and this loss of fatty cushioning forms natural hollows under the cheekbones. For a flattering technique use blusher towards the center of the face and on the apples of the cheek, helping to enhance your cheekbones and create a softer look.

Lipstick: Matte lipsticks can be drying and will tend to emphasize lines, whilst high gloss lipsticks can bleed and highlight wrinkles, so stick with natural colors that compliment your natural skin tone. Lipstick that is too dark or vibrant will harden and age your face, consider using a lip pencil for more definition especially if your lip line is getting weaker and fill in with a natural gloss. The waxy texture of a lip pencil will also prevent lipstick from bleeding and feathering into lines, brushing a little foundation around the outside of your lips and setting with powder can also help to prevent lipstick from bleeding.

Eyes The skin around the eyes is far thinner than skin on any other part of the face, which is why it is one of the first places to show the signs of aging. Apply less foundation around the edges of the eyes, as this may draw attention to fine lines and avoid overly creamy eye pencils and shimmery eye shadows, as they tend to smudge and will also emphasize fine lines. Defining the eyes to frame the face may be more important now then ever before, to define your eyes and frame your face. Choose powder that can be applied with a blunt brush will help to give definition without looking too harsh. If you want to really make your eyes stand out, emphasize the eyelashes especially if they have lost their color, layering your mascara to add definition. If you have crepe eyes avoid using a gloss or cream as this will only enhance thin crepe skin. Light reflecting natural eye shadows are your best option.

Things to think about for a mature skin is to avoid matte foundation bases, as these will only enhance dry patches of skin and avoid the use of powders to set your base, which will end up sitting in lines and creases. Textures: creams, gels, liquids all work really well on mature skin helping to impart a more dewy soft finish, that won?t settle into lines like powder does. You want to stay as minimalistic and natural as possible when it comes to your makeup application, helping to create a sophisticated classic look.

How to Save Money on Quality Auto Insurance - Home

August 24, 2011 ? Carol Fromme

With one car bumping into another, slamming into another, tumbliing off the road, or hitting someone or something approximately every 18 seconds in the United States, nearly all states require vehicle owners to carry auto insurance. It invariably adds quite a lump to the expense of owning a car, truck or motorcycle. Some auto insurance plans are more expensive than others. You can save money, often quite a bit of money.

Before you buy auto insurance, it?s wise to do your homework.

Liability Auto Insurance

Liability is the basic insurance that states require. It covers you in case you injure someone or damage property, including someone else?s car, but it does not cover damage to your car.

Generally, people who opt to buy only the required liability insurance have a car that?s paid for and that may be worth less than the cost of repair. In other words, by the time a car no longer has a debt on it, there?s no need to worry about repaying the lender for a car that was totaled. And also, sometimes the car may be worth less than the annual premiums on more expensive comprehensive auto insurance, so an owner may decide to skip comprehensive in favor of less expensive liability. In this case, if the car is involved in an accident, either the owner gets rid of it or has it repaired out of pocket.

The danger for the automobile owner who carries only the minimum required liability is not just that he may find himself without a car after an accident, but that he may be sued for more than the liability insurance will cover. If you have assets such as a home or a nice retirement account, they are at risk in this case.

Even if you want only liability, it?s smart to get enough liability to fully cover your assets in case you?re literally sued for everything you?re worth ? and it does happen.

Comprehensive Auto Insurance

Lenders who give automobile loans usually require the borrower to carry comprehensive auto insurance until the car is paid for and they no longer have a lien against it. And most auto owners want comprehensive insurance at this point ? the cost of repairing a new or fairly new car is very expensive. In the event of an accident, they know they won?t be able to repay the bank plus pay for repairs.

Comprehensive auto insurance also often comes with other benefits ? most comprehensive policies, for example, will cover car rentals, so you don?t need to buy the insurance at the car rental kiosk. And along with collision coverage, comprehensive insurance also covers your auto if it?s damaged in an earthquake, fire or other event. Some auto insurance companies, such as 21st Century Insurance, part of the 82-year-old Farmer?s Insurance Group of Companies, even offer 24/7 roadside service.

What Affects Costs

If you treat the highway as if it?s a NASCAR track, chances are you?re going to get pulled over. Maybe a lot. And that means tickets. But no matter how expensive they may be, the tickets by themselves are nothing compared to the way your auto insurance may sky rocket, particularly if you are a young male.

Speeding tickets are proof that you are reckless and careless and that you are more likely to be involved in an accident. So face it: any insurance company is going to make you pay a high premium in exchange for covering your reckless butt. If you want to hold your auto insurance costs down, maintain a good driving record.

The automobile you drive will also dictate insurance expenses. Some cars are more likely to be stolen, and insurance companies charge premiums that reflect that. Before you shop for a new car, give your agent a call and ask what makes and models you should avoid to keep a lid on insurance expenses. Also ask what features, such as an automatic braking system (ABS), will lower your auto insurance costs.

Many auto insurance companies, including 21st Century Insurance, also offer discounts if you also insure your home with them, if you?re on the Dean?s list, if you?ve completed a defensive driving course or numerous other things. Ask about them, and shop around.

There are good deals on auto insurance ? 21st Century Insurance says that drivers who buy auto insurance with them save, on average, more than $300.

So to save money on auto insurance, keep a lid on speeding, drive safely, inquire about special deals, and with the help of an agent, weigh your insurance needs against insurance requirements.

No one has been reported killed in the quake, but some of the attempts at comedy may have caused serious injuries. While some Twitter contributors criticized the ribald responsse, others simply noted the social media phenomenon.

"WHEN A QUAKE STRIKES: Step 1, tweet that you felt it. Step 2, RT where else it happened. Step 3, crack current-affairs-related cause jokes," tweeted Emma Godmere.

Here' a quick scan of the best five Virginia Earthquake Political Jokes, so far.

@tpcarney The Washington Examiner's Timothy P. Carney wrote:

"Krugman says it wasn't big enough."

@TheTweetOfGod wrote:

"There was just a 6.0 earthquake in DC. Obama wanted it to be 3.4, but the Republicans wanted 6.0, so he compromised."

@murphymike, GOP political consultant:

?Bachmann out first with statement: as President she?ll lower quakes to 2.9...?

@steveweinstein Steve Weinstein:

Shorter Romney: earthquakes are people, my friends."

We said five, but as a bonus, here's our favorite non-political quake joke:

@riptor riptor

"my etch-a-sketch gallery! It's RUINED!"

Seen any good quake jokes tweeted, post them in the comments section.
