Graphic design is one way for a brand to convey a message to its audience. Graphic designers use typography, visual arts and page layout to help them articulate their message. Common uses of the medium include brand identity and logos, web sites, printed publications, advertisements and product packaging. The growth of the graphic design industry can, for many reasons, be attributed to the rise of consumerism. With the emergence and popularity of the internet comes a new found purpose for graphic designers. Graphic designers are now trained in basic web code as well as all of the programmes used for digital design so that they create websites and applications suitable for the web and its audience. Graphic designers always had to think about typography, page layout and visual arts but now all of their decisions have to be conducive for the internet.
When making decisions about page layout they have to think about issues such as above the fold or below the fold, navigation, colour and signage. When making decisions about typography they have to think about which fonts are best suited for reading off of a computer screen, how much content there is and how tiring a font is to read, as well as ensuring that the most important content is also the most visible. Because the internet is an interactive medium, it is critical that graphic design also be interactive. In other words, website visitors should be able to access the content they are looking for easily, they should be able to jump around from page to page, order, comment, reply, and forward on the content to whoever they want. Any internet marketer knows that the more clicks a web page gets, the more committed the visitor is. By asking your customers need-to-know questions or encouraging them to take action, web designers are building a relationship and pushing the customer closer to the end goal.
For a competitive edge, graphic designers should be familiar with all areas of the medium, including illustration, photography and sculpture. It is always recommended for artists of every kind to look back at history and see how the medium has evolved and who did what well. By researching other artists, designers can start developing or adding to their own style. On now at the Tate Britain for instance is an exhibition of the Vorticsists - a radical art movement that beamed briefly in the years before, during and after the First World War. They took inspiration from cubism and futurism to create a rebel art movement that combined design, visual arts, poetry, prose, typography and sculpture. It was a short movement but one the produced a lot of beautiful work and had a lot to say. It might be a good one to see for anyone interested in design, poetry and how the two fit seamlessly together.
