Christians seek president's help in Karnataka

New Delhi:?

A Christian group wants the intervention of President Pranab Mukherjee to restore freedom of the press in Karnataka and to ensure the release of two jailed media persons.

CSF general secretary Joseph Dias urged Karnataka Governor H.R. Bhardwaj to send a report to the President on the state of affairs in the BJP-ruled State, particularly relating to the arrest of the journalists and strangulation of press freedom and freedom of expression.

The CSF also sought a judicial inquiry into the arrest of the journalists and suspension of the police officers responsible for their detention.

The two journalists--Naveen Soorinje of Kasturi TV and Sharan of Sahaya TV--were arrested in connection with an attack on women inside a party-hall in Mangalore.

On the evening of July 28 last year a group of men, alleged to be members of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike (vigilance forum), barged into the Morning Mist home-stay and brutally assaulted boys and girls celebrating the birthday of one of them.

Police arrested 44 people in the case including the two journalists, whose reportage exposed the criminals.

The Mangalore Rural police, who are investigating the case, charged the newsmen with abetting offences such as rioting, unlawful behavior, and outraging the modesty of women.

Soorinje, who denies all charges, claimed his arrest was politically motivated because he had exposed the local administration's failure to deal with cases of so-called "moral policing" and attacks on minority communities by right-wing Hindu groups.

Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rules the state and media reports suggest there was tacit political support for police to detain the journalists for their act that exposed Hindu fanatic behavior.
