Chartwell, a massive home on 31 acres off Avinger Lane in Davidson, is up for sale. Completed in 1992, the house is one of the largest to come on the Lake Norman area market recently, and experts say it could sell to a single owner or to a developer who might subdivide the property for more homes.
Owners Nason and Margie Fishback are asking $6.5 million for the house, which he helped design. The building is modeled after his family home in Brookings, South Dakota, with interior elements borrowed from the governor?s mansion in West Virginia.
The house totals about 8,440 square feet, while a mostly unfinished basement has another 3,000 square feet. Attached by a covered walkway is a guest apartment, with about 1,200 square feet. The surrounding property is wooded, with a pond and tennis courts.
Realtor Julie Lopez said she expects one of two scenarios. ?It?s either somebody who wants to be in town, with privacy and acreage, or it could be developed, and the property subdivided,? said Lopez, of Ivester Jackson Distinctive Properties, who is helping to market the property.
?It?s a one of a kind home,? she added.
The Fishbacks have been the sole owners. Nason Fishback, who is an investor, and his wife came to Davidson a few years before building the house, and formerly lived in homes on South Thompson Street and Woodland Street. They raised four kids in the home, which has four bedrooms and 4 full and 2 half baths.
Fishback said he had three goals when building the house. He wanted it to be ?good sized,? ?handsome and stately,? and ?lonely.? It certainly fits the latter description: It?s surrounded by trees and is not visible from either Avinger Lane, where it can be reached by a long gravel drive, or from nearby Pine Road.
The house also has plenty of light. ?We deliberately faced exactly south, and deliberately put the living room on the west side. We spend much more time there than any other room,? Nason Fishback said.
The master bedroom on the second floor also faces south, and has windows on three sides. The house also has a broad entry hall with two staircases (an idea borrowed from governor?s mansion), a wood-paneled library, a parlor, office, dining room, breakfast room, pantry and mud room.
Nason Fishback said that at age 81, and with the kids moved away, ?It?s time to sell. ? I?m 81 and it?s time to get my affairs in order.?
